Even in ye goode oldie days prior to V2 when Holy Mass was not in the vernacular there were disputes and scandals. Guy Fawkes was born and Baptised in the shadow of York Minster. I was just a little further away (in a house not the street). (I know you were being poetic, Rose) My first name is William but I think I was named after my two grandfathers not the Saint. However, he is one of my patrons another is the Saint of the day I was born on. Secularly I was born on one of the Bank Holiday Mornings. The army fire guns at midday but so far they have not had any success in shutting me up. Sorry Rose, I doubt you were born in the County of York. When you came into the world, Yorkshire was a a geographical county divided into three Ridings (West, East and North). York was a City and County in its own right. I think the city has lost its county status. For a few years we became, ignominiously, part of North Yorkshire but then regained our independence. The City of York now includes a few villages and areas where sheep and cattle graze. For non Tykes, a Riding, in this sense, is a very old word for a 'third'. Here endeth the Lesson. |

There is also Saint Wilfrid of York, and St Margaret Clitherow was a York woman. |

offered mass for William of York today and had to educate my congregation, all 3 of them, so glad I had checked the link. They had read the times this morning who listed St Edgar the Peaceful. |
