Sorry to digress but Rose wrote: "GKC may have been referring to the Roman invaders who built the city walls at York not many miles away" The present City Walls in York are medieval not Roman. The Romans certainly built walls around their city which was even smaller than the medieval city but they no longer exist. There are, however, Roman ruins to be seen as well as the Multangular Tower in the Museum Gardens.
