A week or so ago I mentioned to my parish curate the practice of prayer for those who, most unfortunately, have taken their own life. Obviously he agreed that this devotion in one's private prayer - names mentioned daily in my case within the response to "For Those Who Have Died" It has been on my mind since to mention this here and particularly as my current duties/practices do not give me enough time to participate very much, if at all, in this section. I am sure you will understand. I have always mentioned - within that prayer usually at the end of the time after DO Evening Prayer - obviously my relatives, friends, mother and father and brother etc. It is not a very long list and I admit I say it by rota sort of. However included are three or four named souls who come under this category and currently 3 unnamed souls whose names I have forgotten (I merely say 'and three others' because rightly Our Blessed Lord knows who they are). Occasionally I might have a Mass said. To get to the point here, I was wondering how one could share this with the prayers of others. What I mean is that for example, at the end of my personal mentions I could just as easily say to Our Lord - "and those of Rose, or Katy, or Mairtin". I mean for any suicides they prayer for. As I have just said, it would not be necessary to have names, merely the forum name of the person who wants mention of their own devotion in that respect. I was wondering how to suggest a fruitful way, and considered posting here for ideas. One perhaps that would run week by week e.g. one week I would mention daily "and those prayer for by x", next week 'and those prayed by y'. And on the third week those prayerd by z'. Keeping to a forum list. Listing rather like a priest has a list of those who have asked for a Mass intention. I think you will get the idea. When you get to the end of the list then you start from the front all over again. My curate agreed that often the most forgotten of souls are those that fall under this category; and we both agreed that such a practice has great merit. And just imagine the prayers we might receive from heaven when one of such souls reaches there parhaps with what little aid this devotion may bring to accelerate their passage there. I leave you to think about it. PJD |

Prayer for those who have taken their own lives is a great act of charity. I have several people who I pray for regularly but one in particular comes to mind as her anniversary occurs in a few weeks time, she took her own life in the summer of 1990. She was desperately unhappy and being treated for acute depression. One afternoon she walked in front of a train. I conducted her funeral, grateful that the then newly revised rite of funerals finally had some prayers for suicides. Her 8 year old daughter was sitting impassive in the front row next to her father. I tried contacting them later but he would not allow me in and I have always prayed for that poor little girl and wonder where she is today. A few years ago I planted some flowers on her mother’s neglected grave, they grow still. I think it would be wonderful if someone else prayed for her and I thank you for the kind offer. If it helps think of her as a troubled wonderer, for her fate rests in the hands of the merciful Lord and though she died without hope I pray that as she wonders in the darkness of purgatory she will find the love she could not find on earth. |
