St Philip Neri (1515-1595) is one of the most attractive of the great saints, charming people into conversion through his 'joyful heart' and mischievous sense of humour. As a priest, St Philip spent hours in the confessional as part of his missionary efforts in Rome. His Oratory movement is also famous of course for fostering the use of music, including cultivating great composers such as Palestrina.

St Philip pray for us, and pray for our priests.

Fr Marsden in a recent article on St Philip Neri in The Catholic Times mentions that the saint's exhuberance sometimes led him to do cartwheels along the aisles of the church!

And some of us (including me) are uncomfortable about dancing and clapping in church!

I told my little granddaughter that story yesterday, before Mass, and she was enthralled. I also told her that St Philip once sent two of his altar servers with candles to accompany someone who left immediately after receiving Holy Communion - I noticed that after Communion she "clocked" anyone who left early and looked very disapproving
