I read on RNS that for the first time an Arab is representing Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest as part of a duo -- one's Christian and one's Jewish -- in the first time an Israeli entry has featured lyrics in Arabic.
Unfortunately, I find the contest generally unwatchable - but sometimes we watch the results - This year it's without Wogan,I believe, so we may not even do that :musicnote:

For me, that would be one good reason to watch it!

So, Graham Norton's more your sort of thing, Patrick? I confess to being a little surprised.

The Eurovision has gone down steadily in the post V2 years.

Lulu's Boom Bang a Bang Bang of 1969 was still very much in the pre-V2 spirit.

I agree. But the V1 and the V2 were very much about boom bang a bang. Just ask old eastenders.

Israel had two lady singers, one a Jewess and the other an Arab. There was support and opposition among both communities.

I have a confession to make - I am a real Eurovision Song Contest fan :bl:

I thought this year's contest was one of the best I have ever seen (apart fron the repeated picture of Russia's Miss World and the prattling of Graham Norton) certainly the two semi-finals weeded out most of the crud and I thought that there were quite a few really good songs in the final. I also thought the jury & tele-vote combination did much to ease the geo-political block voting of the last few years.

I was backing Azerbaijan (3rd), but Mrs Draig had selected Norway (1st) - because their lead singer looked so cute

I can't see what people were seeing in the UK entry, I thought it was one of the worst 5 songs - and I thought Andrew Lloyd Webber was on another planet saying how well the song had been performed.

I just can't see any other country matching this - Russia seemed to be making a statement of superpower status by spending as much on staging the contest (about $42 million).

I've never understood why Israel can enter the Eurovision Song Contest anyway. Since when has Israel been in Europe?

Bucks Fizz and Johnny Logan. That was my kind of Eurovision.

It isn't about geography, Eurovision is a child of the European Broadcasting Union.

Basically the EBU is a technical body which was formed in 1950 so precedes and is unrelated to the EEC / EU.

EBU gives a central broadcast mechanism for programme exchanges, gives a single contract bargaining tool for international events such as the Tour de France and it promotes harmony in the technical aspects of broadcasting.

Active Members are public service broadcasters extending all the way to Russia, Central Asia, North Africa and the Middle East - so that is how Israel get involved.

I think the Vatican State is a member of EBU so they could put in an entry to Eurovision - any suggestions?

Sandie Shaw won the Eurovision for Britain in 1967 with Puppet On a String - I think trads can claim her for the 'pre-V2 camp' since the worst excesses of V2 had not really been implemented by 1967. I think the expression on Sandie's face below probably anticipates some of the changes to come! :smoke:

Did somebody call for camp post V2? This should fit the bill.

This must be my earliest Eurovision memory:

Oh, and then this, which I haven't heard since then:

As I recall, Sheeba also featured on Name That Tune, the Tom O'Connor game show.
