John Hume : Now I feel stupid. The only excuse I can offer is that the word Laureate set me thinking about literature.

If I am not mistaken not only did they both attend St.Colms but they were both there at the same time for some years.

I used to work for some solicitors, and De Minimis non curat lex was scribbled on a Post-It note and stuck to the wall in the accounts room.

That reminds me of the story told by a don at my college who was adamant that it was true. When he marked scripts from India he read one which had this postscript:
"Dear Mr Examiner, if you will look kindly on my efforts and award me good marks, I will pray for you forever to God, whom you so closely resemble."

I hope this is not too risque:

A brash young lawyer called Rex
Had a very small organ of sex
When charged with exposure
he replied with composure,
"De minimus non curat lex"

If I am not mistaken not only did they both attend St.Colms but they were both there at the same time for some years.
John Hume was born in 1937 and Seamus Heaney in 1939 so not only were they at St. Columb's at the same time, they were also among the first generation of Catholics to go to Queen's University following the introduction of the 1947 Free Education Act which many will regard as the real starting point for what was to happen in 1968.

It is St. Columb's by the way, I can't think of any other saint who has so many variations of his name ;)

Edit
Sorry, a 'senior moment' there, although John Hume was part of that generation, he didn't go to Queen's. After St. Columb's he went to Maynooth to study for the priesthood ; though he did not complete his clerical studies, he did get his degree and went on to become a teacher, first in St. Colman's in Strabane and then back in St. Columb's where he taught until he became a full time politician.

He taught French (maybe History too, I'm not 100% sure) in St. Columb's whilst I was there 1963-68 though I never actually had him as a teacher.
