St. Philomena; genuine or not?

I have a question about St. Philomena...
My friend who was my confirmation sponsor has given me a St. Philomena chaplet and prayer book of the "Living Rosary" prayed in her name, but I am aware that St. Philomena was "demoted" for want of a better word:
Quote:

On 14 February 1961, the Holy See ordered that the name of Saint Philomena be removed from all liturgical calendars that mentioned her

So is it ok to pray for her intercession or not?

This isn't the first time my friend has given me something "dodgy" ~ she gave me a book about Christina Gallagher whose visions and stigmata were investigated by the Vatican and found to be false, and the autobiography of Oonagh Shanley, an ex-nun who was heavily involved in eastern practises of "spiritual healing". I am beginning to treat very warily anything she suggests now! It was the same friend who secretly baptised her grand-daughter, as I mentioned in another thread.

So can anyone shed light on whether St. Philomena is a valid saint?

Many thanks,
Mrs.P xx

It's fine to pray to St Philomena. Even EWTN has this novena to her:

Quote:

We beseech Thee, O Lord, to grant us the pardon of our sins by the intercession of Saint , virgin and martyr, who was always pleasing in Thy sight by her eminent chastity and by the profession of every virtue. Amen.

Illustrious virgin and martyr, Saint Philomena, behold me prostrate before the throne whereupon it has pleased the Most Holy Trinity to place thee. Full of confidence in thy protection, I entreat thee to intercede for me with God, from the heights of Heaven deign to cast a glance upon thy humble client! Spouse of Christ, sustain me in suffering, fortify me in temptation, protect me in the dangers surrounding me, obtain for me the graces necessary to me, and in particular
(Here specify your petition).

Above all, assist me at the hour of my death. Saint Philomena, powerful with God, pray for us. Amen.

O God, Most Holy Trinity, we thank Thee for the graces Thou didst bestow upon the Blessed Virgin Mary, and upon Thy handmaid Philomena, through whose intercession we implore Thy Mercy. Amen.

So how come she was removed from the liturgical calendar? Was she "de-canonised" ~ I have read that there is some controversy about her relics/history?

St Philomena is still a saint and has not been 'De-canonised' her original feast day was on August 10th; that date is now occupied on the universal calendar by St Lawrence, deacon and martyr.
Periodically the church reviews the universal calendar and elevates or demotes saints according to the needs of the time. St Christopher was another to be famously removed from the calendar. There are many reasons for the changes and one should consider there are only 365 days in a year, (something else the church has changed from time to time :wh: ). For example the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta may soon become St Teresa of Calcutta and I am sure that the church in India will want her included in their liturgical calendar but will she be in the universal calendar, who will she displace.

I believe St Philomena's feast is 11 August, a date appointed to St Clare in the Liturgical Calendar for England & Wales
Quote:

Memorial
* 11 August
* removed from the general calendar in 1961 by Pope John XXIII, but continued devotion was permitted

I for one would not object to St. Philomena being re-instated in favour of the Feast of the Dedication of St. John Latern
