Ned, If you have bead shops there, why not make your own? You can get the crucifixes and the medal where everything joins together at stores online, and with all the beads those shops have - it would be real easy to come up with 59 different ones. Just a thought... |

Almost inevitably, despite my intentions and efforts, by the third or fourth Hail Mary of a decade my mind has wandered. Regarding prayer in general it is not rare for me when successfully concentrating on the words to suddenly come to a stop because I have forgotten what comes next. |

I know the problem, Derek. I am the same But there must be something wrong somewhere. The beads are intended as an aid to concentration, and I have to suspect that we don't nowadays use them in the same way that people did a hundred years ago. In writings on memory-skills the rosary is often instanced as a widely-used mnemonic, but I recall very few instances of that use being mentioned in Catholic literature. Whereas must we all have heard that old song 'my pack of cards serves me as a Bible, Almanac and Prayer Book.'. For the moment I've marked some of my beads with coloured tape, and I've named some of them: seven as the days of the week, eleven and the keeper after the twelve months, and the four paters after the four evangelists. And I think that the Rosary used to be promoted as a tool for troublemakers. I have read that in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the beads were particularly recommended as a weapon of resistance for use by the christian slaves of the Turks. Those beads would just have been pieces of cord, with knots in. The Christian victory at Lepanto, snatched from defeat, has been attributed to the galley-slaves who, as an Ottoman ship was captured, would straightaway join in the battle beside their liberators. Those slaves attributed their fighting-spirit to their constant surruptitious rosary prayers - which is why the anniversary of the battle was named as the Feast of Our Lady of Victories, and then renamed the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. I just hope that Our Lady accepts my praying the rosary as I do it. I said in an earlier post that I found it easier to talk the prayer to Our Lady as opposed to saying it and decided not to try to consider the theme of the appropriate mystery too deeply. Before comencing the decade I meditate briefly on the situation - not unlike the antiphons prior to the psalms and canticles of Morning and Evening prayer - and then talk the Hail Mary to her. I can't accept that we should have to jump through mental hoops when saying our prayers. Goodness, it could take hours to say the five decades. |

I had forgotten about the old thread "Praying the Rosary". The two similar topics are now merged. I started the new one off initially in the General Discussion section because it is not often that topics in the Seasons, Feasts and Devotions section attract many responses. Most of the topics in there, that have plenty of responses, started in the General section. It must be due to people noticing what is near the top. If I move it now, people might think its gone. There is no reason why it should not, eventually, be transferred. |

One of the beauties of the Rosary is, that the person praying has choice. A person can meditate on a mystery for ages, or fit in a decade when there is a short space of time available. One can think of the events of the mystery, or how to relate them to our daily lives, or one can concentrate on the meaning of the actual prayers. |

"One of the beauties of the Rosary is, that the person praying has choice." That's right Rose. In fact I'm more likely to say the Hail Mary three times or even a decade to fit in to the time I have chosen. It's like everything else. Choose what suits or, rather, what you want. |

Ned wrote "The beads are intended as an aid to concentration, and I have to suspect that we don't nowadays use them in the same way that people did a hundred years ago." I don't find them as an aid to concentration, merely as a very useful help to sub-conciously to count to ten (a decade) and to count to five (decades). |

I'm of the opinion that if I'm to meditate on the mysteries of the rosary then I can only manage one at a time, and one, only the one, for the week, perhaps the month. And in the case of the Holy Passion I'll be meditating on the entire Passion at the one time, and for a good long while. I'm sorry not to be going along with everyone else, but I know my own abilities and limitations. I have come to understand that God hasn't equipped me with the mental abilities to do otherwise. If we were to follow all the exhortations, recomendations, novenas and various forms of prayer and meditations we would surely need a lifetime to observe them all once. Therefore inevitably, whether we like it or not I am sure we must all tend to sub-conciously choose those most appropriate for us. This does not in any way mean those not chosen are inferior or unsuitable. |

Worldwide Rosary The Worldwide Rosary takes place this Saturday. For more information check the ICN Listings page or see: http://www.churchforum.org/rosario/ingles/ The devotion began in 1996 as a gift to the late Holy Father for the golden jubilee of his Priestly Ordination and grew from there.
