Most of us Irish Americans - and Americans in general, don't understand how corned beef is made. It has nothing to do with corn. It's the salt pellets which resemble kernels of corn - hence the "corn"ed beef. For some reason, that just makes me giggle.

And now you have all made me hungry with all those good things you've had in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. :)

Independent Catholic News report that next year, St Patrick's Day will be moved to 15th March because 17th March falls in Holy Week
Quote:

The feast day of Ireland's patron saint is set to move next year to avoid a clash with Holy Week according to The Irish Catholic newspaper.

The paper claims 2008 St Patrick's Day will be celebrated of March 15 instead of the traditional March 17, because it falls on the first day of Holy Week.

It will be the first time in almost 100 years that St Patrick's Day is not celebrated on March 17.

Full article St Patrick's Day

I checked the calendar and today is not April 1st, so can this be true - and what happened almost 100 years ago to cause the feast to be moved?

The event is also moved on the rare occasions when, due to Easter falling on a very early date, March 17 would land in Holy Week. This last occurred in 1913. That year the parade was held on Saturday, March 15, because Easter was on March 23 (making March 17 the Monday of Holy Week). This same scenario is scheduled to arise again in 2008, when Easter will also fall on March 23.

Thank you Clare. I always thought St Patrick was as immoveable as Christmas :D
I wonder if all the "St Patrick's Day Parades" will be on 15 March next year

The decision makes perfect sense, St Patricks Day would otherwise be on Holy Monday.

So when will St. Joseph's Day be celebrated?
Not that I ever could forget my Mother's anniversary, but being between St Patrick and St Joseph makes it particularly easy to remember.

So when will St. Joseph's Day be celebrated?

Wikipedia

Quote:

Because March 19 always falls during Lent, St. Joseph's Day feasts often have no meat, even though—because the feast day is classed as a solemnity—abstinence from meat is not required according to Canon law, even if it falls on a Friday. If the feast day falls on a Sunday (other than Palm Sunday), it is observed the following day, Monday, 20 March, instead. If it falls during Holy Week, it is moved.

Singapore Catholic News

...

In 2008, if the feast of St. Joseph were to be celebrated as usual on Mar 19, it would fall on the Wednesday of Holy Week and if the feast of the Annunciation of the Lord were to be celebrated on Mar 25, it would fall on the Tuesday during the octave of Easter.

While the two feasts are among the 14 solemnities marked with special care in the Catholic Church, they do not take precedence over the commemoration of Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection. Therefore, the congregation said, in 2008 the feast of St. Joseph will be celebrated Mar 15, the day before Palm Sunday, and the feast of the Annunciation will be celebrated Mar 31, the Monday after the second Sunday of Easter, which also is Divine Mercy Sunday.

Looks like St Joseph and St Patrick will just have to share the 15th!

Since the last occurrence of this phenomenon was in 1913, I don't think even the most paranoid of us can blame V2 in this instance.

Isn't this fascinating? The Congregation has promulgated March 15 for St Joseph next year, but that same day has been announced for St Patrick! Some of the St Joseph websites slipped up on the date, and the St Patrick's Day Parade organisers are scratching their heads!
