I don't pretend to be fluent in German, but I remember a little - and I'm sure that's what it says; no - I think that's what it says. Pastoral theologian - could that be someone who thinks about God while he's minding the sheep? |

According to the Catholic encyclopaedia pastoral theology is a branch of practical theology; it is essentially a practical science. All branches of theology, whether theoretical or practical, purpose in one way or another to make priests "the ministers of Christ, and the dispensers of the mysteries of God" (1 Corinthians 4:1). Pastoral theology presupposes other various branches; accepts the apologetic, dogmatic, exegetic, moral, juridical, ascetical, liturgical, and other conclusions reached by the ecclesiastical student, and scientifically applies these various conclusions to the priestly ministry. |

Did he jump or was he pushed? Wait; has he jumped at all? Posted Feb. 23, 2009 4:15 PM || by Phil Lawler || category Inside Out Last week in my Commentary essay, "The crucial test for the pontificate of Benedict XVI," I commented on the controversial appointment of an auxiliary bishop of Linz, Austria, and reported: "Father Wagner had asked the Pope to withdraw his nomination. And the Pope had agreed." Not so fast. The Vatican press formally announced Father Wagner's appointment on January 31. There has been no formal announcement of his withdrawal. For official purposes, therefore, as far as we know, he remains a bishop-elect. from http://www.catholicculture.org/commentary/blog.cfm?id=367 |

I haven't seen the announcement promised for today by the Kathnet article. Maybe I misunderstood, maybe the announcement is late, maybe they were wrong... KatyA |

Katy, could it possibly have been a reference not to a pastoral theologian but to a theological pastor ? I imagine a spiritual man, appointed to a shepherd's post, alone on the foothills with his sheep and musing to them on the mystery of life and our relationship with God. Those big German words come in a funny order sometimes. John |

Perhaps this had something to do with the opposition to the Holy Father's appointment of Father Wagner? from catholicculture.org: News Briefs Linz priest who opposed bishop's appointment admits living with girlfriend March 09, 2009 http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=2238 An Austrian priest who helped rally opposition to the Pope's appointment of an auxiliary bishop for the Linz diocese has admitted that he keeps a mistress, the German-language Kath.net news service has revealed. Father Josef Friedl, one of the 31 deans who said they would refuse to accept the episcopal ordination of Father Gerhard Maria Wagner, told a public forum that he opposes the discipline of priestly celibacy and lives with his girlfriend; he said that his parishioners have no objections. According to the daily Der Welt, Friedl is one of several deans of the Linz diocese who lives openly with a woman. Meanwhile another Austrian prelate, Bishop Egon Kapellari of Graz, said that Father Wagner-- who has withdrawn from the episcopal appointment-- had "traumatized" the Austrian public with his public statements of opposition to homosexuality and insistence that God punishes sin. COMMUNIQUE ON POPE'S MEETING WITH AUSTRIAN BISHOPS
The meeting was not the ad limina visit, rather it is seen by many commentators as a result of previous happenings in Linz and other Austrian dioceses. |
