Lent Reading Groups; Are Lent groups a Protestant thing?

Lent reading groups have historically been the preserve of Protetants. Why is that? Are you a Catholic who is taking part in a Lent Group this year? If so, what are you reading?

1. Until fairly recently, priests never encouraged Catholics to read anything tougher than a CTS booklet.
2. I am a Catholic but I had not planned to take part in a Lenten reading group.
3. What would you suggest? Would you be willing to lead a reading group on this forum?

Is a reading group similar to the discussions we are having onActs of the Apostles and The Gospel of Luke ?
Excuse my ignorance, but I've never actually heard of a reading group in a parish.

Bible study is one area in which Catholics are, in the main, neglected. Two years ago, I suggested to my parish priest, who is quite an expert on Scripture, that we would benefit from a parish Bible study group. He said it was a good idea, nothing has been done about it.

I am just reaching the end of my private reading of St John's Gospel. It would have been good to share with others.

Rootfroot, welcome to the forum. I second Sean's invitation to you, to lead a reading group on this forum.

Thanks for the invitation. I'd love to MC a reading group for Lent.

Elsewhere I'm actually hosting a live online discussion of the Holy Father's Lent booklet "Lent, the Journey to Easter Joy". But I recognise that live discussion online isn't for everyone, so I'd love to participate in discussion with people on this forum too.

How do people feel about using the same text "Lent, the Journey to Easter Joy"? It's 72 pages long, so we'd be reading and discussing 10 - 15 short pages per week. Those pages would theme the discussion on the forum thread for the week. Perhaps it would be a good idea to post a short distillation of questions and themes at the start of each week to kick things off.

Feel free to suggest other texts and other approaches.

It sounds good.

I'm sorry I only just noticed this thread.

I just posted a very similar thread myself:

Discussion / Prayer Group - FORUM Thread
"An adult faith does not follow the waves of fashion and the latest novelty."
"Having a clear faith, according to the credo of the church, is often labelled as fundamentalism."

For as long as I can remember, the diocese in which I live has resourced lent reading/discussion groups.

Usually [sigh] they look at the Sunday readings. This year, however, they have broken out and are looking at St Paul (since this is the year of St Paul).

The material is on line and it is very good.

PJD - I think you must be in the same diocese

Rose - I have never met a PP who is prepared to let a Bible study go ahead at a parishoners suggestion. They may exist, but I have not mat them. I have come across several who "delay it to death". It is no exaggeration to say that they are afraid of it.
"The institutional and charismatic aspects are quasi coessential to the Church's constitution" (Pope John Paul II, 1998).

Until I started using the internet, I didn't realise Catholics had Bible Study groups - I'd always thought that was something Protestants and other sects did as that was all they had.

Rootfroot, as the members are avid users of the internet, I suggest the reading group be based upon something available online.

Like Gerry (see above) I have never found a priest interested in Bible study. And, I am interested in a Lenten reading plan.

I followed Gerry's link to The diocese of Arundel and Brighton and downloaded the booklet which will be used there. I would be happy to use this booklet.

So

Protestants are discovering Lent and Catholics are discovering Bible Study Groups. We are on the way :yahoo:

It is very possible to get Bible Study going in a parish but you need to be prepared to do it yourselves. There is much Catholic video/dvd/cd and special books that provide superb materials.

I will read what goes on in this thread but don't have time enough to contribute much. I wish you all well here.

Like Katy, I am a bit unsure about what you mean.

A reading group to me is like a poetry reading.
Someone posts something they think may be of interest and move on.
It has a sense of freshness and the unexpected about it.

But taking, for instance, the 72 page book and going through it page by page, is a bit like the two studies mentioned.

Count me in, but I would prefer the unexpected moments of revelatiom and pass on to another day!!

Also, I think you will have to decide, as Timothy is already opting for something as well

I'm fine with using the Arunel Diocese material. It's free and readily available here. The thread that I set up for the discussion is here
Thanks for drawing my attention to that material.
