Yes Rose I think we need these reminders to prevent gross distortion of life before V2. I was a child pre V2 and children were encouraged to give up sweets - a proprtion did. Adults were encouraged to give up something. A proportion did. Usually alcohol or sweets or sugar in tea. Others reduced these things others carried on regardless. I dont remember anyone going to extra Masses though I do remember attending stations of the cross - which were held every evening. Thats it - no medieval torture at all. Gerry |

I just wanted to say that I am not suggesting anyone follow such practises, or even that I do (lest anyone thinks I am a loony!), but just pondering the value there may be in them

Googling for the price of a hair shirt produced no results so I am unable to advise on the value. |

If you're good with a needle, you can buy a metre of sacking for a few quid and make your own! |

But then you would miss out on this special Lent only offer: "During the 40 days of Lent, if you purchase a sack-cloth hairshirt, we will also send you a handmade cat-o-seven discipline, worth $29.99 absolutely free." I'm not making this up. |

Normally I can't resist a bargain, but I'll pass on that one. Anyone who pays $50 for what seems essentially a mailbag with holes deserves to wear it. |

A couple of weeks ago I paid £3.99 for 12 kilo of carrots, in a hessian sack. I could spend the early days of Lent living on carrots, then when they were gone I could cut three holes in the sack, one for the head and two for the arms. |

I'm laughing my head off at the thought of the customers who require discretion.

And if you bought beans instead of carrots, you could mortify those around you as well. |

Do any of you folks remember that Lent finishes at 12:00 noon on the Saturday after Good Friday. In Catholic areas of Salford many years ago, one used to see men standing on street corners on this Saturday with a cigarette in one hand and a pocket watch in the other. Those were the days. Sean |

No, Mrs.P. I do think we take the "soft option" with Lent penance - and,in the main, that is encouraged. e.g. At a recent service, I heard that "giving up something" was "the old way" and now we say a few more prayers, perhaps an extra Mass, give to Cafod and we're OK. What that group would make of physical mortification I really do not know. KatyA |

There is nothing soft about fasting and, not only has this continued to be encouraged, it continues to be required under pain of sin. Gerry p.s. Of course not mortal. |
