.......

This is the Catholic Church I used to go in as a wee lass, after school . I would just sit there and look in awe at all the beautiful statues, and big curcifix and the wonderful stained glass windows, and wondering what it must be like. I thought it must be very special being Catholic... and many years later I did convert to Catholicism.

Surely, Patrick, the SSPX would erase post V2 memories and indoctrinate you with pre V2 memories"

My favourite childhood memory - the excitement of rushing home from school to find out if we had put the Christmas tree up yet and looking at the lights on the Christmas trees already up, thinking how lucky those children were who had trees with lights that flashed on and off!

Certain things take me back to my childhood, one of them is the smell of Domestos which makes me think of Saturday evenings when I was a kid.

We used to go to the matinée in the local cinema, when we would get home my mother would have the floors washed - oilcloth in those days, no fancy carpets - and she obviously used some bleach in the water; newspapers would be spread on the damp floors to keep them clean.

Round about 5 o'clock, we'd all have the keep quiet whilst my dad got the football results of the wireless to see if he'd won a fortune on the pools.

Talking about going to the matinée, there was always a serial before the main feature; my parents used to make us go off 'the pictures' for Lent and we used to wait anxiously for the kids who were allowed to go to keep us up to date with what was happening in the serial.

My friend's Dad coming home from war. My friend had never seen his father. His Dad was upset when the little boy was more interested in the thing on his shoulder. The sailor got off the bus, young John cried out "Mam, there's a sailor, it must be me Dad. There's a monkey on his shoulder."

Mars Bars that were wrapped in paper instead of plastic.
Dandelion and Burdock.
Having 12d and thinking it was a fortune.
Walking round Woolworths with the 12d, with black and white lino tiles on the floor and thinking the shop went on forever...
Watching Queen's supermarket burn down in Halifax and later seeing it rebuilt as ASDA.
A pair of shoes made out of white PVC.
Being allowed to sit on my own on a bench at the back of the Church while my Mum was upstairs with the choir.
Rearing goldfish and seeing them die.
May Processions - being allowed to wear our First Holy Communion dresses and veils for them.
Messing about in the river at Ingleton.

Joining the library 2 years younger than the official age, and then thinking I had to read ALL the books in the Books for beginners shelves before I could go on to the rest... :bl:
little bottles of orange you could get from the milkman
Standing outside the pub with a bottle of lemonade and a bag of crisps, while Dad was inside, and then telling Mum we'd had a lovely time in the park!
Smiths crisps with the little blue bag of salt.
Round the Horne on the wireless, and not getting the jokes but laughing anyway.
the toyshop in Lambeth Walk, also the live eels at the fishmongers... eeww!
the terrible smell from the Marmite factory in Vauxhall
Having measles when I was 5; oh that was miserable!
Being scared of the outside toilet with its spiders.
Bread pudding!

Anyone remember Pacers? They were chewy, green and white striped, spearmint sweets. Similar texture to Chewits.

Having 12d and thinking it was a fortune.
I saved a halfpenny a week, until I had 24. A whole shilling,a bob? I spent hours counting them over and over again.

Going round to the old lady at number 40 to help her make a clip rug. I did that regularly, I must have been at least 40 before my mother told me, that as soon as I left, the dear lady used to remove the clips and put them back in, properly.

Knitting striped scarves from the best bits of wool from ripped out sweaters.

Taking the old clothes to the rag warehouse, we got 2 shillings a stone for mixed and 2 bob a pound for pure wool.

Catapults. Bent pins for fishing hooks. Playing kick the can. Drawing cricket stumps on the front garden wall, with a stone. The grooves are there to this day.

Playing rounders in the road. Now there is a petition for a pelican crossing, due to heavy traffic.

Sledging down a hill nearly a mile long. Now it is so busy it has road markings, and traffic jams.
