A few months back I decided to start making cakes regularly. So far I've not been too adventurous: just cocoa or Camp Coffee.

Here's my first effort for the year - a Camp Coffee cake.

What's in a camp coffee cake??
coffee and chicory Posted Image

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-404516/Camp-coffee-forced-change-label-PC-brigade.html

Daily Mail

Camp coffee forced to change label by the PC brigade

The makers of Camp Coffee have changed the label on their famous jars - after complaints of racism.

The makers of the chicory-flavoured essence are now using an image of a Scottish soldier sitting side by side drinking coffee with a turbanned Sikh.

Earlier labels showed the Indian apparently serving the kilted soldier which provoked a storm of protest from race equality groups who claimed at the time that the label delivered "an offensive and racist" message.

As an interim move the firm removed the tray from the servant's hand but now the label depicts the bearer and the Gordon Highlander officer sitting as equals - no longer promoting the master-servant Days of the Raj message.

The Central Scotland Racial Equality Council has welcomed the latest updating claiming that it will help change the mentality of young people to see how different races now relate.

Mukami McCrum, director of the council added: "It is an encouraging and progressive move. Times have changed and it is heartening to see that a new message is being sent out."

At one time Asian shopkeepers even threatened to stop putting the brand on their shelves because of the label.

A spokeswoman for Camp Coffee now owned by the giant McCormick foods group refused to reveal if the race criticism was the reason for the changes in the labels stating only that the brand underwent "continual development."

She said: "Any alterations to the Camp Coffee's label design are given careful consideration to ensure the products continued success."

Camp Coffee has been made in Scotland since 1885 and was said to have orignated when the Highlanders requested a coffee drink which could be brewed up easily by the army on field campaigns in India.

Then there's apparently another version, where the Sikh is sitting on the soldier's lap: Very Camp Coffee.

Would the pc brigade have complained if the Scottish officer had served coffee to an Indian?

Thanks Clare, but unfortunately although I drink gallons of coffee, I hate anything else coffee flavoured! Can we have a vanilla flavour next time please?

What's in a camp coffee cake??
The cake:

6 oz caster sugar
6 oz butter
6 oz self-raising flour
3 eggs
1 splash Camp Coffee
1 splash hot/warm water from kettle

Mix caster sugar and butter together.
Add the eggs, and water, and mix it about.
Add the flour and then Camp Coffee, and continue maixing until it looks like it can be poured into two round baking tins (approx 6" diameter, I guess?).
If you're not afraid of raw eggs, get a spoon and eat what's left in the bowl! Always tastes nicer than when it's all cooked, IMHO!

Gas Mark 5 for 20 - 30 mins, depending on how crispy you like your cake!

The icing:

4 oz icing sugar
4 oz butter
1 splash Camp Coffee
1 splash hot/warm water from kettle.

(The chocolate cake is the same only with a dessert spoon of cocoa instead of Camp Coffee - and you can always do the icing of one with the cake of the other!)

Oh yes, the chocolate sounds delicious. I've just finished a huge slice of chocolate fudge cake with cream so I'd better let that digest first

Derekap

My parents used to drink Camp Coffee before they went onto Coffee Beans with a perculator. One morning my mother couldn't understand why it tasted so horrible until she discovered she had used a similar sized bottle containing a similiar black liquid which was syrup of figs.

(By the way, Clare, thanks for the offer, I too prefer chocolate)
