On browsing the forum, I have noticed a few references to "Green Cardigans"!

What, please is a "Green Cardigan"? Perhaps, as a convert, I still have some pieces missing

I have worked out already that a "Green Cardigan" is not a good thing...

(I don't personally have a green cardigan in my posession, btw, but I have a nice lime-green crocheted waistcoat. Is that the same thing?)

Green Cardigan is the lady of the parish who has appointed herself ruler of all that goes on in the parish - like it or not if she says it must be, it will be.
Carlo wrote a wonderful Ode to GC but I can't find it just now - perhaps he wil be kind enough to post it again

Like all "good agents" she often disguises her appearance. :tc:

God Bless all who visit this forum,

LADY OF THE GREEN CARDIGAN
Thou shalt have no other ladies before thee
Either at the going out or leaving of the porch
Or wherever sandals are worn
In PAC and SPUC
And committee of readers or liturgy
Thou shalt be at Father's side
And shalt wear the green cardigan
And carry the book of minutes
Which thou hast not had time to bring up to date
But thou shalt tap the cover from time to time
As a sign of thy position and authority
Thou shalt issue no agenda before the evening of the meeting
And deliver all reports personally and only by word of mouth
On Sundays without fail thou shalt distribute the Mass leaflets and the bulletins
And the covenant forms
Even unto those who pay no tax
Thou shalt pay no heed to their pleadings
But smile patiently and address them by the names of their brothers, sisters, parents or the Saint of the Day
For there are so many tasks
And so little time for detail and courtesy
In thy world where few are called
And only thou art chosen

Dear Mrs. Pogle. A year or so ago, I had to explain to my friends here on the Cyber Forum that I have two green cardigans - one dark green and one a lighter shade. And I had to promise not to wear them outside of the house when we return home (which I certainly hope is this year). And I must definitely NOT wear one to church. Since I have been trained fairly well in enemy identification, I feel certain I will be able to spot the typical offender before I am approached in a new parish. However, we've already asked our new parish priest to give us a shout if one is approaching from a blind spot! And as Jennifer so aptly put it - run - run away! :bud:

I almost forgot to mention, we have several brilliant poet laureates here on the Cyber Forum and the above poem is, indeed by our own Msgr. Carlo, Esq. You will enjoy their postings and since I haven't mentioned it - welcome aboard. This is a great Forum to be associated with.

This is just Mick's take on the green cardigan thing - not to be taken too seriously.

With steely glare they transfix the unsuspecting soul,
Pinned by a look that they may swoop and instill fear.
The fault of speaking to Father without their consent,
For they have to judge what is fitting for his holy ear.

The sun outside may blaze from a clear blue sky,
And cars like ovens await their owners to bake.
Yet she who must be obeyed will in Cardigan Green
Stamp her foot and cause the earth to quake.

For those attending Mass this bright Sunday,
The lady is but a thorn in the side.
While Mass remains a holy devotion for all,
She can’t see it through her pride.

Pity the lady in green, who’s tabernacle is a closed mind.
Pity the lady in green and pray for her miserable soul.
Pity the women who gives the wrong impression,
While digging for herself a rather deep hole.

:)

It seems to me that "Green Cardigan" is a colloquial term restricted to the UK. I'd never heard of the term until I happened to start reading this forum. Initially I thought it was something like the "scapular" which I had heard about, and which I honestly don't care about much.

For one thing, in Australia, it's too hot to wear cardigans most of the year (at least in subtropical Brisbane) and up north they've all got their togs and floaties on the moment.

And I don't know that we have the problem here, to the extent that you seem to. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see Green Cardigan type ladies around the Mass. I do sometimes hear traditionalist Catholics making mountains out of molehills (eg. complaining we say the Apostles Creed instead of the Nicene Creed, as though Almighty God's going to give a stuff one way or the other).

This thread is just so funny  Love the poems!

I don't think we have a "Green Cardigan" in my Parish. We do have a lady who seems to be in charge of a lot of things, but she's nice and always asks me if I've got any new photos of my Grandchildren ~ bless!

But the naughty side of me is very tempted to get a green cardigan and wear it to Mass, just to see people's reaction :wh:

You never know if a member of the Cyber Forum is in the parish. Best not to tempt fate!
