Over a two day period I was asked for the answers to these questions:

1 Why is one dog's nose wetter than the other dog's nose?
2 Why do retrievers have such thick hair just under their necks?
3 How do they make some wine taste different from other wine?
4 Why do dogs like being patted on their back end?
5 Why is the skin behind this dog's nose brown?
6 How many of my grandmother's brothers brothers were in the First World War and how many of them were in the Second World War? (I happen to be the grandmother!)
7 What makes Christmas crackers bang?
8 If they put explosive in them why are children allowed to have them?
9 If they put explosive in them why don't other things around them blow up?
10 Why are the smaller dog's feet bigger than bigger dog's feet?

re No.8. A few days ago a 22 year old woman was prevented from from buying a box of crackers in a branch of M&S because she had no ID to prove she was over 16 years old. M&S claim it is illegal to sell crackers to anyone younger than 16 years.

(For anyone in North America by 'crackers' I refer not to biscuits but the party item)

I read about that, Derek. It was due to Health and Safety regulations under some Explosives Act!

2 Why do retrievers have such thick hair just under their necks?

My guess, for an answer to 2, is that retrievers being gun dogs, were bred to pick up birds. A bird that is still alive could claw through the dog's neck, and damage the windpipe or jugular vein, so breeders set out to produce a dog with long thick hair around the neck.

3 How do they make some wine taste different from other wine?

It depends upon the variety of grape used for production of the wine.

During a visit to the vinyards near Dijon we were told that grapes grown in the same valley can taste different according to which side they are grown - because their flavour is influenced also by the sun.

Also when emigrants have taken vines to California, South Africa or Australia the grapes gown have a different flavour because of the nature of the soil in which they are grown. They have to develop their own species of vines.

Oh, the innocence of young children.

My eldest daughter, her husband, and three children arrive tomorrow from Germany and will be here for a week. I am looking forward to their questions.

Grandad, how far back down a dog's throat does its tongue go?
Why does water turn into ice on a cold night and why does it turn back to liquid when it gets warmer?
How do batteries work?
We see lots of live rabbits in the fields. Why don't we see dead ones.

Answer: To it's bark.
Why does water turn into ice on a cold night and why does it turn back to liquid when it gets warmer?
Answer: First it's frozen stiff, then it isn't!
How do batteries work?
Answer: Slowly.
We see lots of live rabbits in the fields. Why don't we see dead ones.
Answer: Because we don't live in Wisconsin (road kill along with squirrels).

Opa,
Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?

What did you say? I've often wondered about that myself :yahoo:

I said that it did stick but weakly, and that it 'unsticks' when needed.

My eldest daughter told me that grandchildren are God's reward to parents for not strangling their children.
