A friend asked me about Zetaboards, who provide our forum software. A large extended family are setting up their own forum, so they can all keep in touch. What a brilliant idea! They could set it up with sections fo photographs, announcements of births and marriages, exam results, house moves, general chatter, and of course a family prayer group. I am thinking of doing one for our grandchildren. |

Good idea Rose. I suppose my own family already do this but in a less formal way. Just been to Scotland to see my mother on her 91st birthday and occasions like this in our mob tend to lead to an exchange of photos , texts and so on immediately afterwards. But a site would be good so I'll suggest it. John |

Can people post photographs on this forum? I know we can put a photo into a post by linking to an external site, but in the forum itself? |

Yes, Sean. Your own photographs can be posted on a private family forum, or on any other. Steps: 1 Put some of your photographs on your computer, either by using a digital camera or scanning ordinary photos. 2 Register on photobucket. com They have a forum, where you can get advice. You will have a username and a password. 3 On photobucket, click the Upload button, and you upload your own photos to your photobuckete site. Once uploaded, they are on the internet, viewable only by the people who have the username and password. The family could share one, or each of you could have your own. Each photo has a little box giving its URL. 4 On your forum, click the button to post, click Image, copy and paste the url of your picture. It sounds complicated but provided you follow the simple steps, it is quite simple. Katy did the graphics for this forum, by loading them onto photobucket and then pasting them into the software. If any forum members decide to set up forums for their own families, here are two little tips: You can set it up so that nobody but registered members (ie the family) can see it. You can have a section only viewable by the adults. That makes it possible to discuss birthday presents for the children, or just have a moan about the kids, in privacy. There may be times when you have to pass on bad news, and don't want the little ones to find out from a forum. Some of the adverts that get onto forums are not suitable for children (or adults for that matter). You can pay to have an advert free forum, I think it likely it would cost less than £10 per year. If any of you want advice on how to go about it, just post here, I can help you, and though I do not want to speak for KatyA I hope she too would advise. Like any other task, its easy when you know how. It used to frighten me to death, using the admin software. Hey, you could discipline the kids by suspending them from the forum. The grandmothers could exercise

I was that friend. (That statement makes me feel like the soldier at the end of The Deck of Cards )The Internet can be a fantastic medium for families keeping in touch. A few years ago, our family when through a lengthy period of major trauma and I ended up as the one coordinating the flow of information, often in the form of 'Breaking News' issued several times a day. The communication was in the format of an email list with about 60 people on it; I did set up a discussion board for a while but most people seemed hesitant to post on it - in fairness, a lot of people on the mailing list were far from Internet savvy. I'm trying it out again, hoping that the younger members of the family in particular will get into it. I have set up a section for 'Family Memories' where we older members of the family can post stories handed down from our own parents and grandparents but not really known by the younger generation in the hope that the stories will be preserved - for example, my father's uncle was a very colourful character and a great teller of stories, some of which I've posted there to get the ball rolling. I was spurred me into doing this now by finding a facility to create an online family tree at http://www.ancestry.com. We are a very large family* and there are no avid genealogists in it but some of us have dabbled in it from time to time and I'm hoping that by pooling our information, we can end up with something worthwhile. More importantly, however, I am encouraging people to keep it up to date with Births, Marriage and Deaths as we are the people that somebody may be trying to figure out in a couple of hundred years time (* When i say large, I mean LARGE. When my Dad died 9 years ago, he had 108 descendants, all alive - 13 children, 65 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. I haven't got an up to date final count yet, but its about 140 now!) |

This thread had diversified into a discussion about software, so I split some posts to make a new topic in The Parish Hall, called Recommended software, and anti virus & spyware stuff. I've had a bright idea. Let use this thread for the concept of family websites. We have over a thousand colour prints of our family growing up. They have all been scanned, are on my hard drive at present. If I upload them all into photobucket, a selection can go on a forum viewable only by the family, so grandchildren, and possibly one day their children, will be able to get some idea of their roots. They may find it interesting to see how their forebears dressed, what toys and hobbies they had, and what familiar places used to look like. One day, when we find the time, we may have a go at genealogy, and hopefully load family trees onto the family website. All I will need do to keep the forum private is set it up so that it can only be seen by registered members. I will be the admin, so I can register each family member, and send them their passwords, which they may then alter. They will then be free to post and read. |
