According to the Telegraph,Christopher Jamison, the Abbot of Worth in West Sussex, has accused the corporation of "exploiting spirituality" to sell its products and of turning Disneyland into a modern day pilgrimage site. Telegraph Article In fact, rather than the content of Disney's films, the Abbot appears to be complaining about the attendant consumerism - of which there is a lot. My house is full of Disney Princess stuff, but I've never looked at it in that light before. Naturally, dear Damian has a view, but I think he misses the point the Abbot is making Holy Smoke

The Abbot is right. Disney is pernicious. Damian is missing the point completely. |

Disney films themselves usually have a moral aspect, which is good in itself - ie the baddies always get their comeuppance in the end. However, the latter day merchandising that accompanies all these films is just wrong. |

Clearly Clare has never pondered the deep truths in the song of Pocohontas. "How high does the sycamore grow? If you cut it down, then you'll never know And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon whether we are white or copper-skinned till you can sing with all the voices of the mountain and can paint with all the colours of the wind You can own the Earth and still All you'll own is earth until You can sing with all the voiced of the mountain and can paint with all the colours of the wind" Can you still say that Disney is pernicious after such sublime sentiments? Sycamore feller! |

That's my oldest daughter's favourite Disney film P1... When she was younger I think she thought she WAS Pocohontas. She loves that song... |

The Abbot may be concerned about what he sees as consumerism. What is the harm in a family spending their own money on having fun? A Church of England bishop has urged people to give each other jars of home made jam at Christmas, instead of buying presents. A Catholic abbot is anti Disney. Don't they know the retail trade and entertainment employ people, who can do without being put out of work and thrown on the dole queue? If we were all of like mind to those two, we could transfer our poverty inclinations to boycotting monastic shops, that tend to stock goods of the highest quality. At one time, two subsidiary companies of Disney were producing material that produced material that was not compatible with Christian moral standards. Disney has broken the connection with those companies. http://www.afa.net/disney/ Hey, lets ask the Abbot if its ok to watch The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, produced by Disney. |

Disney films that portray witches and enough to scare the strongest hearted, off being haarangued by Ladies of the Guild of the Green Cardigan. I deduce that DIsney is good for our emotional well being. |

I think the Church needs to have a look at it's creativity or lack of it, rather than accusing others of misusing their own. I'm Catholic now, but in Australia the premier christian outfit for encouraging training in creativity is a place called Hillsong, with courses in media & TV, dance, and worship. But they still fall a long way short of the sort of influence Disney has. |

Ok Ok! I will 'out' myself and say two of my happiest days were spent at Disneyland Paris several years ago now. It was just such a wonderful happy time (there was no pressure to buy anything) and the girls, much younger then, loved the Disney parade and the rides and shows. It really was just good fun and much better than I thought it'd be. Apart from the having to go and see a Chiropractor afterwards due to putting my neck out on "Space Mountain"... |

I found that a profoundly religious experience Emee. It was the first (and definitely the last) time I'd ever been on a roller coaster and I closed my eyes and prayed the whole time. I stand corrected - it was Thunder Mountain, not Space Mountain. I said I had my eyes closed. Edited by KatyA, Monday, 1. December 2008, 22:13.

I knew Prinknash used to produce pottery and Buckfast still make tonic wine. But humbug is methinks a new venture for Worth. Trust the Benedictines! |
