Hi all - I was reviewing a book for my sad old blog the other day - Fatal Misconception - The Struggle to Control World Population by Matthew Connelly. I'm sure many of you are aware of all this, but some of the stuff in the book, eg about India, shocked me and I had to remind myself "this happened, this is history and present fact". I wondered if you might be interested in reading it:

I just read through your blog, FD and there is quite a lot of information there of which I was unaware.
Good post

Thanks KatyA - as a lifelong pro-lifer and former health-worker I thought I'd heard it all, but I have to admit that after writing that particular blog I had nightmares for the first time in years. - FD

One of the areas I disagree with the Church is the contraceptive pill, although I agree with it's moral stance on abortion. I't all very well decrying birth control, but if you're going to take a hardline stance against birth control, then be prepared to tell the governments of China and India, and the city authorities of Mexico City how they should cope with their burgeoning poplulations.

If you don't have any practical solutions to offer for those problems, then why should they listen to you? What have you got to offer, except unlimited populations and with them, unlimited consumption and supply problems?

I don't think it's coincidence that the most senior person I have heard dissenting from the Church's teaching (before Humanae Vitae) was Archbishop Thomas Roberts SJ, Archbishop of Calcutta.

OsullivanB did Archbishop Roberts do that publicly? When was it?

I have corrected the chronology. He spoke against the Church's teaching on birth control but, to be fair, it was while the debate was still continuing - Lent Term 1967, the Catholic Chaplaincy, Fisher House, Cambridge. The Acting Chaplain, Fr. Joseph Christie SJ closed the meeting summarily, saying he would not have heresy preached in his house. It caused something of a stir in the national press at the time. There was a little added piquancy as the Archbishop and the Acting Chaplain were both based at Farm Street.

Several posts on infallibility and the Inquisition have been moved to an existing thread "Papal Infallibility" in order to return this thread to the subject of population control
