I've watched the whole series of Apparitions. I have to say it was pretty well done (although I'm not too sure that the name of it is particularly 'on-target'). For someone like me there were some heart rending sequences - there have been moments where the narrative and depictions brought a lump to my throat. In tonight's (the last) episode a statue of Our Lady was broken by a diabolically possessed man and I could have cried out. In a previous episode a 'ritual' was performed under duress by the 'Father Jacob' character that was really unsettling.

As a drama it definitely provokes thought and portrays a certainty of faith that is rare in any mainstream production these days, even if the whole thing is meant to be something dramatic and suspenseful. It's a shame it wasn't better promoted as the ratings haven't been brilliant, unfortunately. That said, I'm firmly of the opinion that it will have annoyed the rabid atheists and I bet it's done a pretty good (coincidental) job of countering those awful anti-God bus adverts!

Didn't episode three cause you any concerns, Paduan? I complained to the BBC because I thought it grotesque that a nun should be shown deliberately eavesdropping on a confession and then reporting what she heard to a Cardinal, who did not stop her but rather congratulated her on a job well done. What impression that gives of the seal for which men have died, I don't know. At any rate I found it very offensive.

Not really very happy about Martin Shaw acting out the consecration of the Host either in tonight's episode.

Certainly I was rather taken aback by the eavesdropping. My immediate reaction was that it was scandalous - but I think that was the whole point: that this rather unpleasant Cardinal - who didn't seem to be fully in tune with the requirements of his faith - was prepared to ride roughshod over the principles of the Church in order to achieve his own political ends and persuade a nun to sin to further his aims. She did at least repent!

I found the 'consecration' as portrayed in the circumstances of the drama indicative of the suffering of the character - that's why it was conducted wrongly.

Yes, there were shortcomings - for most people these would be regarded as more 'technical' in nature - but overall I think it was a rare production that consistently presented Christian belief in a good - and salvific - light, even if some of the characters within the Church were flawed (as, indeed, I'm sure they have been in real life).

I think it's a shame that the ratings weren't particularly high, since the story was clearly open to a sequel.

I stumbled upon this Jane Teresa's blog and found myself in agreement with much of what she said:

I picked up a good read in church after Mass this evening: a newletter from an organisation called Catholics Unplug your Televisions (CUT). "We believe," they declare, "that television changes people's values, beliefs and leads many away from Jesus." Even religious programmes about Jesus lead people away from Jesus - permeated as they are with heresy and pseudo-history.

I am not against tv per se. I believe there are enough good and life-enhancing/non-damaging programmes on if one exercises discernment, which we should do in all circumstances, as Catholics. I wouldn't throw out the baby with the bathwater. The trouble is, most people can't help watching the drivel!

I have really enjoyed watching snooker this last week. I find it relaxing. And I love Gardener's World and Countryfile...and I enjoy watching some films. I stayed up late to watch Amelie last night, and the whole feeling of the film was a good one, and it gave me lots to think about, and has actually led me to reconsider some of my attitudes to life, in a very helpful and positive way ~ a gem of a film!

Tell me this is a wind-up, talking about life-enhancement via TV and then going on about watching snooker?
