Embarrassingly, my elder daughter's school was the school in the national news a couple of years ago which became famous for banning tinsel in the run up to Christmas...

Why? Let me guess:

Misinterpretation of Health and Safety Regulations?

They were worried it could be used as a weapon - eg strangulation.

Most of the children complained that this was so completely stupid and over the top and that it wouldn't even have crossed their minds. There had been no incidents of this happening beforehand.

I was offended that the senior management of the school should consider our children, who are under their care during the day, to be such reprobates.

If the children wanted to indulge in strangulation they could tie a few shoe laces together. Don't tell the management, they might make them all wear slip on shoes.

Or quite so thick!
It seems from what I have read and what little research I have troubled to carry out (which is not much) that under the veneer of "Elf and Safety" in the majority of idiotic cases there lies "Can't be bothered" or "I don't like it; can I find an excuse to ban it?"

Maybe it's just the order in which the drawers were put back into the cabinet, but a school I was working at recently had drawers labelled:
Islam
Judaism
Christianity
in that order.

No wonder Christianity doesn't necessarily mean much to our school children...

When my son started school he came home with a Happy Mother's day card. I was therefore looking forward to a Father's day card. The big day came & went - no card. So I asked why the children hadn't been asked to make cards for their dads. I was told "some children don't have fathers that they see regularly, so we don't do them so as not to upset them" (and yes, this IS a catholic school).

Still, my daughter came home from play-group with a Happy Eid card, so that was alright.

Peace
Ian

If they banned tinsel in California, what would happen to "Tinsel Town?" Honestly, this has gone just too far! And it would put a real damper on my being a glamour queen!! My feather boa would look terribly drab without tinsel!!!

Sean, Anglo Cath is not here every day so I take the liberty of answering.

Eid is a major muslim festival.

Thanks Rose, I only have T'Internet here at work, so I am limited to lunchtimes, and I don't always like to remain at my desk at lunch - people think you're still at work and bring you some more!
