The matter required for a valid celebration of the Eucharist consists of wheat bread and grape wine (CIC 924). In the Latin Rite of the Church, the bread must be unleavened for a licit celebration (CIC 926). In all rites of the Church, the wine must be mixed with a small quantity of water for a licit celebration. However, neither the presence of water nor the absence of leaven is needed for a valid celebration. In fact, most of the Eastern Rites use leavened bread for confecting the Eucharist.

FALSE ALARM! Roll up the celestial firehoses. The fires of hell turn out to be a misidentified damp squib - water was present all the time.

I wonder if with DR's permission and that of other posters this forum might not be best served by the removal of all postings on the subject of the unwatered wine.

I think it should be left (considering I just spent a good while looking into this subject, and you never know, it may educate someone else)

Besides, it is relevant as such question go to the heart of our understanding or misunderstanding, which is something the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments will have to deal with on a daily basis.

What do we know about Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera of Toledo (the one who supposed to replace Cardinal Arinze)?

He is also youngish (in vatican age terms born 1945), and is a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei.

The other rumour I read was "the list of those who may be picked by the Pope for the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments (Prefect) is reduced to two names: Cardinal Caņizares Llovera, Archbishop of Toledo, and Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith, current secretary of the same dicastery."

Both would be good choices, both support the Popes liturgical plans. The Pope is slowly showing his authority and placing people who aer loyal to powerful positions.[redit][/redit]

VATICAN CITY, 9 DEC 2008 (VIS) - The Holy Father appointed Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera, archbishop of Toledo, Spain, as prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. He succeeds Cardinal Francis Arinze, whose resignation from the same office the Holy Father accepted, upon having reached the age limit.

Well he is wearing standard pre-V2 No 2 kit although the pectoral cross looks worryingly modernist and slightly 'eastern' !
