The church my wife and I attend has Holy Mass on Saturday Evening and Sunday Morning. When it comes to Holydays of Obligation the times can vary. During school terms there is a Holy at 9.30 which is attended by the children from its Primary School and some adults and again at 12 noon. Today there was only one Holy Mass and that at 12noon. The Parish Priest is on holiday so we had a retired priest and he said he would be offering Mass tonight about 12 miles away. The Church was about half the normal crowded Sunday Morning congregation consisting of pensioners and a few grandchildren. Of course some would be on holiday, others working and a few may have aimed for the noon Holy Mass about five miles away or the Evening Holy Mass in the same church. |

Due to work committments, I attended New Rite Mass at a Church other than my regular one. I was delighted to read on the door: "'If you want to talk in Church, then talk to Me.' The Blessed Sacrament is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ." |

As the feast of the Assumption is drawing near again, I thought I would draw attention to the novena in preparation for the feast (on page 1 of this thread) which we did last year. KatyA[redit][/redit] |

I was delighted to see quite a few people at Mass tonight; and to hear that the 2 earlier Masses were well attended. We need to take care of our remaining Holy Days before they take those from us as well.

I'm told that the novena is followed in Knock prior to the feast, but, in any case, it's in my diary for next year. Thanks again. |

. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (15 August) is deeply imbedded in popular piety. In many places the feast is synonymous with the person of Our Lady, and is simply referred to as "Our Lady's Day" or as the "Immacolada" in Spain and Latin America. In the Germanic countries, the custom of blessing herbs is associated with 15 August. This custom, received into the Rituale Romanum(200), represents a clear example of the genuine evangelization of pre-Christian rites and beliefs: one must turn to God, through whose word "the earth produced vegetation: plants bearing seeds in their several kinds, and trees bearing fruit with their seed inside in their several kinds"(Gen 1, 12) in order to obtain what was formerly obtained by magic rites; to stem the damages deriving from poisonous herbs, and benefit from the efficacy of curative herbs. This ancient use came to be associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary, in part because of the biblical images applied to her such as vine, lavender, cypress and lily, partly from seeing her in terms of a sweet smelling flower because of her virtue, and most of all because of Isaiah 11, 1, and his reference to the "shoot springing from the side of Jesse", which would bear the blessed fruit of Jesus.
