There is a lot of very good modern poetry. I found this one in an anthology by Kingsley Amis of his favourite poems. I know nothing of the author or the rest of his works: just that this one hit home hard in the place that really good poems hit home hard. I'm glad to have been able to share it.

Hello God
11 Feb 2006

Hello God, I called tonight
To talk a little while
I need a friend who'll listen
To my anxiety and trial.

You see, I can't quite make it
Through a day just on my own...
I need your love to guide me,
So I'll never feel alone.

I want to ask you please to keep,
My family safe and sound.
Come and fill their lives with confidence
For whatever fate they're bound.

Give me faith, dear God, to face
Each hour throughout the day,
And not to worry over things
I can't change in any way.

I thank you God, for being home
And listening to my call,
For giving me such good advice
When I stumble and fall.

Your number, God, is the only one
That answers every time.
I never get a busy signal,
Never had to pay a dime.

So thank you, God, for listening
To my troubles and my sorrow.
Good night, God, I love You, too,
And I'll call again tomorrow!

Thinking

If you think you are beaten, you are;
If you think you dare not, you don't
If you'd like to win, but think you can't
Its almost a cinch, you won't.

If you think you'll lose, you're lost
for out of the world we find
Sucess begins with a fellows will,
Its all in the state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you are;
You've got to think high to rise;
You've got to be sure of yourself
before you can ever win a prize.

Lifes battles don't always go to the
stronger or faster man,
But sooner or later the man who wins
is the man who Thinks he can!

Prayer of St Gertrude for the souls in Purgatory

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the Universal Church, those in my home and within my family, Amen.

Everything is possible,
Nothing is too great,
Do not be afraid,
To make the choice you make.

Everything is possible,
And within your arms reach,
Listen to your heart,
And what it has to teach.

Everything is possible,
And waiting for you there,
Run and grasp your dreams,
Not one more moment spare.

Everything is possible,
Make it all come true,
You can do it, I know you can,
Because, I believe in you.

Prayer To Christ The King
O Jesus Christ,
I acknowledge Thee as universal King.
All that has been made,
has been created for Thee.
Exercise all Thy rights over me.
I renew my baptismal vows,
renouncing Satan, his pomps and his works;
and I promise to live as a good Christian.
In particular do I plege myself to labor,
to the best of my ability,
for the triumph of the rights of God and Thy Church.

Divine Heart of Jesus,
to Thee do I proffer my poor services,
laboring that all hearts may acknowledge Thy Sacred Kingship,
and that thus the reign of Thy peace
be established throughout the whole universe.

Amen.

O come, all ye faithfu

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem.
Come and behold Him, born the King of angels;

Refrain

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

True God of true God, Light from Light Eternal,
Lo, He shuns not the Virgin’s womb;
Son of the Father, begotten, not created;

Refrain

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation;
O sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
Glory to God, all glory in the highest;

Refrain

See how the shepherds, summoned to His cradle,
Leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze;
We too will thither bend our joyful footsteps;

Refrain

Lo! star led chieftains, Magi, Christ adoring,
Offer Him incense, gold, and myrrh;
We to the Christ Child bring our hearts’ oblations.

Refrain

Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger,
We would embrace Thee, with love and awe;
Who would not love Thee, loving us so dearly?

Refrain

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning;
Jesus, to Thee be all glory given;
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing.

Refrain

A New Year Prayer

Holy Father,

God of our yesterdays, our today, and our tomorrows.

We praise You for Your unequaled greatness.

Thank You for the year behind us and for the year ahead.

Help us in Your new year, Father, to fret less and laugh more.

To teach our children to laugh by laughing with them.

To teach others to love by loving them.

Knowing, when Love came to the stable in Bethlehem, He came for us.

So that Love could be with us, and we could know You.

That we could share Love with others.

Help us, Father, to hear Your love song in every sunrise,

in the chriping of sparrows in our backyards,

in the stories of our old folks, and the fantasies of our children.

Help us to stop and listen to Your love songs,

so that we may know You better and better.

We rejoice in the world You loved into being.

Thank You for another new year and for new chances every day.

We pray for peace, for light, and for hope, that we might spread them to others.

Forgive us for falling short this past year.

We leave the irreparable past in your hands, and step out into the unknown new year knowing You will go with us.

We accept Your gift of a new year and we rejoice in what's ahead, depending on You to help us do exactly what You want..

I say it again, we rejoice!

In Jesus name,

Amen.

God, grant me courage and hope for every day
Faith to guide me along my way
Understanding and wisdom, too
And grace to accept what life gives me to do.

It's easy to grow downhearted when nothing is going our way
It's easy to be discouraged when we have a troublesome day
But trouble is only a challenge to spur us on to achieve
the best that God has to offer if we have the faith to believe

A Grandparent's Prayer
Lord, I am getting older, but may I never believe I'm getting useless. I am wiser through the learnings of the years, but may I never stop growing. I am weaker and more frail, but may my spirit stay strong. Thank you for your faithfulness during my whole life, for your comfort in times of difficulty, for courage to face trials of all kinds, and for the gift of joy at all times. Lord, I have many gifts to give - of friendship and love, encouragement and instruction, solace and praise. Help me not to interfere in the lives of others but to give these gifts with humility when the time is appropriate. Keep my faith, hope and love strong, so that from the overflow of these rich spiritual resources others may see the light and feel the life of your healing presence. Through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
