"Why would the Pope think a man from Australia is the ideal candidate for Westminster?"

If I remember right, he studied in England and holds a degree from Oxford.

John, I think you may be wrong, he may be on your side of the :fire:

I would not like to comment on that, John, but Cardinal Pell did study at Oxford.

Deacon Robert wins.

Bishop O Donaghue will have already resigned before the appointed of a successor to Westminster. His successor has already been appointed Bishop Campbell OSA who is now working hard here in the Lancaster Diocese.

Anything changed in your parish recently Fortunatus? People flocking to demand Latin Masses? Priests ordering new forms of mediaeval vestments? Altar rails restored due to popular demand. People running round trying to figure out East/liturgical East?

Not in Wales, fortunately.

I would be perturbed by Cardinal Pell being moved to Westminster. I'm not sure I want someone who has, so recently, knowingly and willfully lied to a victim of abuse, presumably to try to cover it up or limit the fallout of the scandal.

I want a bishop who is uncompromising with the truth and who denounces the despicable crime of abuse of children by clergy completely and without prevarication.

I had a tip-off on facebook, that the The Most Reverend Vincent Nichols
Metropolitan Archbishop of Birmingham, is the favourite for Westminster.

I do hope the rumours are correct. Archbishop Vincent would make a fine Catholic leader for this country.[redit][/redit]

Hmm!

Is this all of Wales or just one of the Dioceses in Wales? Or maybe the Archdiocese?

One has to be so careful these days.

In any event let us pray for a traditionalist.

I pray for the success of the best candidate for the current situation and problems and for the future of the Catholic Church. He may not necessarily be a traditionalist in Carlo's sense.

Three months ago Damian Thompson, on his blog Holy Smoke, claimed he knew the three names put forward to the Pope, for Westminster.

I must be careful what I say about this subject, but the search for a successor to Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor is taking an awfully long time, isn't it? As Mandrake revealed recently, a terna (official list) of Archbishop Vincent Nichols, Archbishop Peter Smith and Bishop Arthur Roche has been submitted to Rome by the Nuncio. But I gather that more than one terna has been rejected.

Link

Bishop Roche has just completed the major task of overseeing the new translation of the Mass. I wonder if the long awaited announcement was delayed so he could complete the task?

I wouldn't dream of rumour-mongering, so I'll just give a link to Ttony's very interesting blog entry

Fr Finigan has drawn attention to Bishop O'Donovan's interview with Zenit which concludes:
P.O'D

The principle challenge, from which many of the other challenges spring, is the rejection of obedience in the Church, due to the modern emergence of a secularist-minded people. The idea of obedience and humility toward God's truth are totally alien to many in this age of assertive individualism.
During this time of relativism we need all Catholics to be enthusiasts for the beauty, goodness and truth of the deposit of faith. To avail ourselves of the riches of God's doctrine we must not approach it with the attitude of consumers, who pick and choose according to taste and personal comfort. We must allow the word of God to judge and challenge us, and sometimes this is hard and uncomfortable.
I am convinced that we will only have a Catholic renewal in this country if clergy and laity, including the bishops, wholeheartedly accept obedience to the fullness of doctrinal, moral and liturgical truth as entrusted to, and protected by, the Successor of St. Peter.

Full interview
According to Damian, there is an article in this week's Bitter Pill rather less than complementary about the bishop
Could Ttony's rumour be true?

I do hope it is.

The Catholic Church in England and Wales needs sorting out, with all speed.
