The month of November is traditionally the time when we pray for our deceased relatives, friends and all who have died. Fr. Finigan has provided a timely reminder about indulgences to be gained Just a reminder of the indulgences you can get at this time for the Holy Souls. [From the Enchiridion Indulgentiarum 4th ed. 2004] (Fr.Finigan's translation from Latin) A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the souls detained in purgatory, is granted to the faithful Christian who 1. on any day, from the first to the eighth of November, devoutly visits a cemetery, and, even only mentally, prays for the dead; 2. on the day of the Commemoration of all the faithful departed (or, with the consent of the Ordinary, on the previous Sunday or on the day of the solemnity of All Saints) piously visits a church or oratory and there recites the Our Father and the Creed. Here is a link to an EWTN article on the conditions required for gaining a plenary indulgence. More information on Fr. Finigan's Blog http://the-hermeneutic-of-continuity.blogspot.com/ |

It's a long time since I heard details of this indulgence mentioned at Mass, but the visiting priest at my parish gave full details at the end of Mass on 1 November and urged people to make use of it. KatyA |

In the 1950's a priest I knew used to spend hours on 2nd November at the front door of a church in a city centre. He would enter the church, say the prescribed prayers and then go out - only to re-enter and pray again. Even when he was leaving and entering he was obviously praying. I remember the indulgence, but frankly over the years I have forgotten the required prayers. He must have sent many souls to Heaven. |

It was always my understanding that this indulgence could be gained for every visit to a Church but I notice in the EWTN link given by Fr Finigan, a plenary indulgence can only be gained one a day. Does that apply to this particular indulgence or not - anyone know? The 2004 Enchiridion has extended the period during which the indulgence can be gained to 8 days so there is still time to visit a Church or cemetery and recite the Our Father and the Creed. KatyA |

I guess I'm not big into indulgences - just know there are so many who need our prayers. I keep them in mind all the time. Sometimes I forget to pray for them, but this reminds me to. |

HELP, Lord, the souls which Thou hast made, The souls to Thee so dear, In prison for the debt unpaid Of sins committed here. Those holy souls, they suffer on, Resign'd in heart and will, Until Thy high behest is done, And justice has its fill. For daily falls, for pardon'd crime, They joy to undergo The shadow of Thy cross sublime, The remnant of Thy woe. Help, Lord, the souls which Thou hast made, The souls to Thee so dear, In prison for the debt unpaid Of sins committed here. Oh, by their patience of delay, Their hope amid their pain, Their sacred zeal to burn away Disfigurement and stain; Oh, by their fire of love, not less In keenness than the flame, Oh, by their very helplessness, Oh, by Thy own great Name, Good Jesu, help! sweet Jesu, aid The souls to Thee most dear, In prison for the debt unpaid Of sins committed here. ~ John Henry Newman |
