Memory can be misleading, but I think the first televised Holy Mass was a Christmas Midnight Holy Mass from Switzerland shortly after Eurovision started.

The Church of England was very reluctant to have their Communion Services televised - hence the pause in the transmission of our Queen's Coronation Service. However, as you well know the first Holy Mass in this country which was televised was offered in St Anne's Cathedral in Leeds. I was indeed pleased.

After that the CofE objection seemed to melt away quickly.

For some time there was a religious discussion programme on ITV (Now ITV 1) on Sunday Mornings. Once a month, rather discreetly, its main feasture (not for discussion) was Holy Mass from a church in Preston, Lancashire. Sadly all the TV companies prefer to talk about religion rather than televise religious services. Even Songs of Praise tends to be talk-show or a rehash under some title or other of hymns sung in previous programmes. It seems gone are the days when we saw people bobbing about in little boats in some holiday resort singing "Eternal Father strong to save"

I don't think Mick is entirely fair to the secular media on this occasion. It was a religious wire service which released the news item and the press were bound to follow up the stroy and certainly in the articles I read they were entirely accurate.

I could produce a list a mile long of items that the secular media have got wrong - in some cases badly wrong. These are cases of reporting events that I witnessed or have first hand knowledge of and so on. Of course I'm not fair to the secular media - I have good reason to question what they publish.

Memory can be misleading, but I think the first televised Holy Mass was a Christmas Midnight Holy Mass from Switzerland shortly after Eurovision started.

It was from Leeds Cathedral. Celebrated by the then Bishop of Leeds, John Carmel Heenan, on 10th January 1954.

A priest gave a commentary, explaining each part of the Mass.

The first Eurovision Song Contest was in 1956.

So there!
