Source: The Tablet Suggestions today that the Pope might issue an encyclical on the environment in recognition that this dwarfs all other issues facing us today. Everybody in agreement that this is the main issue facing humankind and therefore the Church? John |

PJD, Your cynicism re politicians is probably correct but.. All, Pope Benedict will not benefit from any tax increases. Climate change is directly caused by Greed, and in particular the greed of the rich west. Our unsatiable and unprecidented selfish consumption of the Earths resources will bring about regular natural disaters on the scale of the Christmas sunami of a few years ago - probably also larger with larger death tolls. It IS a matter of life and death. Gerry |

Sheesh! There's more to environmental issues than man's misuse of global resources. More to the point, the Encyclical hasn't even seen the light of day yet! Before I could comment on anything the Pope has written, I'd need to see what the Pope had written. The environment is a matter of concern for everyone and it can be severely effected by anything from factory pollution in India, China or the USA to a mighty smack by some rogue asteroid or other. In the past the atmosphere has been clobbered by sever volcanic activity - at the moment there's a volcano in Alaska getting ready to blow - big time - which is why there's a plan to divert aircraft when it blows. It's not just mankind that contributes to environmental concerns through pollution. Remember, we are not talking about global warming or climate change here, but the environment itself. Global warming and Climate Change are a different matter (Unless someone got his terms mixed up). |

In the 1950's I sometimes travelled home with a dirty collar and grit in my eyes, ears and nostrils. The smokey fog in my home city meant the buses just gave-up and crawled to the depot. It was much faster to walk. May we not be suffering from the pollution of those days? We didn't hear of arctic ice melting. Incidently what about antarctic ice? |

I wonder if anyone else connected the readings at Mass today with this thread? Spoke right into it, as did the prayers of the faithful and the sermon which suggested we should be angry at the advertising that draws us into buying things that we dont need and which creates insecurity in our lives. Not to but clothes made in sweat shops, and object to sending all our worst polluting industry to poor countries. Mick - you are correct environment is more than climate change but our greedy sinful exploitation of the environment is what is causing climate change - which many Government strategists think is the biggest danger we currently face. PJD - Last time this subject came up I presented you with the best references showing that scientific opinion on this was settled. Mick provided similar evidence from NASA. Seems like Big Business and the Media are still winning. Clare and PJD - I had not heard such news before but I think it quite possible thet the Pope might write such an encyclical. I hope he does (I may even pray now that he does). Obviously its needed. Gerry |

I think we can all do our part on this issue. Holy Father has his part to play as well. I also hope he writes an encyclical on the subject, because with his influence on the world, only good could come of it. We haven't gone to Mass yet - since we are 6 hours behind the UK, but I will listen intently to the readings this morning and see what Father Larry does with them in his sermon. It should be interesting. |

We are responsible for the environment. If anybody tell me the Pope is meddling in things that do not concern him, I can refer them to Gen 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." |

I hope our Government will impose a punitive tax on food miles. What is the sense in sending Lincholnshire potatoes to Cornwall and the same lorry driver, on his return journey, taking Cornish potatoes to Lincolnshire? |
