Source : The Tablet

The Tablet reviews a new film "Breach" on the case of Robert Hanssen. I was aware of the case of this FBI man who spied for the Russians and is now serving life imprisonment for "possibly the worst intelligence disaster in US history". I was not aware that he was a very devout Catholic and member of Opus Dei. And in a further twist he was addicted to pornography to the extent of placing his own relationhip with his wife on the internet.

Amazingly, the review says the Opus Dei angle is treated very sympathetically in the film and is not used in any lurid way. Personally, I had revised my ill-informed view of the organisation because of Nelly's mother's good experience of it. But here it seems to be treated well for once in a film.

It is amazing though how a man can live so many different strands to his life while seeming absolutely sincere in all of them. Weird creatures, humans.

Not sure the rules allow for one to be both "devout" and "addicted to pornography" - best check with Clare before proceeding on this basis!!!! :wh:

I think it's possible.

Stop picking on me, please, Mrs J.

addicted to pornography

Confession sorts this out; and 'sorrow' has probably done so already - at least we pray so.

what do we mean by devout? Why are catholic christians only referred to as devout.?
Am I devout? Are you?
If I were, beatification would be in order.
I probably sin more than the average, what is the average?
Why do I offer more questions than answers?

I find difficulty in accepting that "devout" Catholic is publicly known to be interested in porngraphy. "Practising" Catholic maybe.

I can well understand a devout Catholic being tormented by temptations of pornographic thoughts.

It is only the secular press that do that. They will say The Duchess of Kent is a devout Roman Catholic, Lord Alton and John Battle MP are devout Roman Catholics. A young girl goes missing, or a lad is shot. The press find out they are Catholics and add the word "devout". I bet they'd say it about me if I was in the papers.

I have never read about devout Baptists, Methodists, or Anglicans.

Hey, do they call Cormac a devout Catholic? What about The Pope?

It is possible. A person with an interest might be praying daily for the strength to fight temptation.

Well, I wasn't commenting on this particular man, of whom I have never heard, but responding to Mrs J's query about whether anyone could be both a "devout Catholic" and "addicted to porn".

I think it's possible. As per what Rose said:

Years ago I heard about a man who was addicted to porn and who later became a priest... big deal. St. Augustin had some interesting confessions as well.

That aside, what I find more surprising is the conflict of interest between being a member of the F. B. I while spying for the Russians and being a "devout Catholic".

Perhaps in the minds of some people the religious life is quite separate from everyday life. Maybe there's still hope for James Bond.

Good point.

Porn addiction is a weakness. Spying for the Russians isn't!

Traditionally newspapers refer to Catholics as "devout" - Protestants are always "staunch" - no - I don't know why either.....
