In an article on Vatican diplomacy, the Economist suggests that the Vatican could "“could renounce its special diplomatic status and call itself what it is – the biggest non-governmental organisation in the world.”
This has provoked a response from Archbishop Dominique Mamberti,
Quote:

“Behind the invitation to reduce itself to a non-governmental organization, apart from a lack of understanding of the Holy See’s juridical status, there is probably also a reductionist vision of its mission, which is not sectarian or linked to special interests, but is universal and inclusive of all the dimensions of man and humanity.

Archbishop Mamberti's full response, together with further comment, can be found at cheisa
I'm not a regular reader of The Economist, although we did at one time subscribe, and I recall one or two articles relating to Catholicism which struck me as having been written by someone who knew a little - but not a lot - about his subject. Perhaps this is another one of those occasions.

Another UN story carried on several sites accuses the UN of manipulation in the presentation of a document promoting abortion in Africa.
Quote:

High-level government officials have told the Friday Fax that AU heads of state have never approved the document, and that trickery and deception were used by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and others to push the document through various AU meetings.

Coincidentally, this follows a report lauding the Ugandan model of abstinence and conjugal fidelity in stopping the spread of AIDS
Quote:

The website AllAfrica.com has published an opinion piece by an African expert who is calling on leaders to follow the successful model of Uganda in the effort to stop AIDS, placing emphasis on abstinence and conjugal fidelity instead of the use of condoms.
The article entitled, “Uganda: ABC Aids Strategy is the Way to Go,” warns that by the year 2010, 100 million people will be HIV-positive, with most of them living in Africa and Asia.

No wonder they don't want the Vatican delegate.

I'm quite a fan of The Economist, though I have very rarely read articles relating to Catholicism, I suppose it is akin to "The Sun" discussing high finance....
"An adult faith does not follow the waves of fashion and the latest novelty."
"Having a clear faith, according to the credo of the church, is often labelled as fundamentalism."
