Seven; The seventh day of the seventh month 07

I do hope that you get to read this before the day is done. Today is the seventh day of the seventh month of the seventh year of the new millennium. So why should this be significant?

The number seven plays the principal rôle in Jewish heortology (science of sacred festivals) and dominates the cycle of the year. Every seventh day is a sabbath; the seventh month is sacred; the seventh year is a sabbatical year. The jubilee year was brought about by the number seven multiplied by seven; the feast of the Azymes lasted seven days, like the paschal feast; the feast of Pentecost was seven times seven days after the Pasch; the feast of the Tabernacles lasted seven days, the days of convocation numbered seven (Willis, "Worship of the Old Covenant", 190-1; "Dict. of the Bible") And of course, the number 666 represents you know who because if falls one short of the sacred number three times.

Today is not so much lucky as sacred. I do hope you all have a lovely memory of a rather special day.

Since I didn't win the lottery (again!) it certainly wasn't lucky for me.

Mick, did you know the story circulating about 10 or 15 years ago that Procter & Gamble was a Satanist organisation? (I'm serious).
It seems that if you held the company's 'moon and stars' badge upside down and looked at it in a mirror you could see the number 666. They had to change the badge. Cost the best part of $1m.
You couldn't make it up!

Number seven is often used in Church matters.

Seven deadly sins, seven capital virtues.
Now somebody else can have a go. There are quite a few others.

Seven Sacraments, obviously.

Karin and I went for a meal at the Family Restaurant. Karin had a delicious lasagne and I had fish and chips (French Fries here) and imagined a lovely pint of Boddingtons while drinking my coffee. It was nice and cool in the Restaurant, but outside the temp. was 92 (f). We also had a sauna... it's called a car.

Numbers? - particularly allied to generalities - take care not to get involved in superstition.

PJD worry not, I never attach power to numbers. I just thought we could have a sort of quiz for relaxation.

Mick said the temperature was 92F..... ( 9 - 2 = 7 ). If it's too much Mick, send some of it to us asap!

Superstition, PJD? I think you may have missed this:

Numbers are important to God. He created the Universe (and I'm not referring to the newspaper!), and numbers are very much part of the Universe and its order. They are also part of Hebrew tradition and Hebrew letters have a numerical equivalent, which is why a name also has a number. The number for Nero Cesar in Hebrew is 666 (Now there's a surprise!). With apologies to newminster, perhaps Nero was Chairman of the Board for Proctor & Gamble (sorry - couldn't resist).

Numbers do have a meaning, which would have been understood in the day of St. John. This is why they are featured in Revelation and intended to impart a particular meaning, so easily misunderstood today.

Derekap wants some of our 92(f)... Wish you could take it from us. The heat index for yesterday (with humidity taken into account) was 100 (f) + and we were among the lucky ones. In other parts of the country the temperature has been well over 100 (f) with a higher heat index. More people die from the heat in the USA than from hurricanes and tornadoes. This is something I would not wish on Britain.

The number three also appears with regularity in Catholic Tradition, beginning with the Trinity. Three members of the Holy Family, Jesus three days in the tomb and so on. So any more threes and sevens?

Yes Newminster, I did know about Proctor & Gamble. It raised quite the ire of many people here in the States and eventually they changed their logo to be more "politically correct." There wasn't anything satanic about the symbol, but you know how people will grab onto something and 'think' something is incorrect, when it isn't.

How about the number of times we are expected to forgive our neighbour?

Baby born at 7am on 07/07/07...and she's her parents' seventh child

Some of us, it is said, are born lucky. And there can be few people with greater claim to that charmed state than Elizabeth Elie.

She was brought into the world shortly after 7am on the seventh day of the seventh month of 2007.

And if that's not enough to bring her the best in life, she is also the seventh child in the family.

Parents Serge and Herbethe Elie were astonished when they realised the uncanny coincidences surrounding Elizabeth's birth, which took place in - where else - delivery room seven at Birmingham's Good Hope Hospital.

Mr Elie, 37, who works for Land Rover, said: "I hope she's a good luck charm when she grows up and wins us lots of money on the lottery, bingo or the horses.

"There are sevens everywhere. This must be a good omen; it's a gift from God.

"I can't wait to tell her that she was born on such a memorable occasion. It is absolutely amazing. I'm a delighted and very happy man."

The couple, who came to Britain from the Democratic Republic of Congo seven years ago, were aware that Elizabeth was due on July 7 but didn't think much of it as their previous six children had arrived a few days either side of their expected date.

Elizabeth - who weighed 8lb 1oz at birth - was taken back to the family home in Erdington, Birmingham, with both mother and child in good health.

Housewife Mrs Elie, 35, said: "We were aware Elizabeth was due on this special date but to be delivered at that time and in that room is just absolutely incredible.

"Serge and I already feel like the luckiest parents in the world, but to have our seventh child born on this day is brilliant.

"I hope Elizabeth will be lucky in life and have lots of good fortune." Elizabeth's six siblings are Daniel, 14, Sagesse, 11, nine-year-old twins Doracs and Enis, Jockebed, six, and Jemima, two.

Emma Whapples, the midwife in charge of Good Hope's delivery suite, said: "I think number seven will be Elizabeth's lucky number for life.

"The only special dates of birth we usually have here are Christmas and New Year - so this is great for us. It's an amazing coincidence and a little bit spooky."

The notion of the "lucky number seven" can be traced in folklore and religion.

For Christians and Jews, God created the world in seven days.

Hindus recognise the seven chakras of the body, Buddha walked seven steps at his birth and Muslim haj pilgrims circle the sacred Kaaba in Mecca seven times.

When the seven seas and the seven wonders of the world are taken into account, it's little surprise that many gamblers also believe in the "lucky number seven".

Three sevens is usually a jackpot on a slot machine, and a seven can also come in handy on a craps table.
