Yes, I agree. But since most of the business which we are considering here is dealt with as a conscience issue Catholic MPs should not have a problem. Where there might be a problem is with such things as supporting the use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV infection. Apart from the fact that most of the evidence seems to be that it doesn't work, if your Catholic MP is a supporter of the use of contraceptives (and we know that there is a sizeable minority of people within the Catholic Church who do not consider contraception to be a sin — at least not a very serious one) then to support the use of contraceptive devices in a prophylactic role is perfectly consistent. You may say his view on contraception is wrong, as may I, but there is a sizeable chunk of our Church that would disagree with you. It is then down to your conscience to decide whether that standpoint is one which you can not tolerate under any circumstances or whether the other parts of his, and his party's, manifesto are such that you can grit your teeth and vote for him anyway. |
