James,

You brought memories flooding back to me.

I am a few years younger than you and a "City boy".

In my native city we had Franciscan , Augustinian and Capuchian Churches.

As you say every day Masses were celebrated on the High Altar and continuous Masses were said at all the side Altars.

Generally these Masses started at 6.00am and carried on until midday.Rarely was Communion offered to the Congregation after the 10.00 am Mass.

Like in Bundoran people would arrive and observe which Mass was about to begin or had just begun and they would follow that Mass. Veryoften Praying on their Beads or following the Prayers of their favourite Novena.

Very often the earlier congregations were men on their way to work. As you also remind us the Mass was celebrated in 20 minutes. My father and my father in law both went to Mass every day on their way to work and the Masses were very well attended. Indeed we tend to forget that these men also worked on Saturday and so they attended Mass seven days a week.

As an Altar server I well remember, during school holidays serving 7.00am Mass in the weekdays and then being sent to a local Seminary, because the students were on holiday, to serve Mass for the Resident Priests, who would "collar" me as each Mass finished and I would not get home until lunchtime. (All Tridentine Rite of course)

Please reconsider your membership because our Faith grows from each other and your contributions are invaluable.

God Bless all who visit this forum,

Alan.

James, I'm glad you are still with us tonight. (I'm 6 hours behind you, so for me, it's still evening!) Like Nelly, I missed the original posting which you all had been discussing and I just want to interject that we would miss you greatly if you were to leave. I'm another one of the older generation from the States, with Mick coming in from Oldham, so whatever our forum members discuss is of interest to me, be it pre or post Vatican II. I may not totally understand what someone is trying to say, but I listen, evaluate and comment (when I finally get some free time). So for me, your comments and insights are tremendously important to me. I really hope you will continue...we need you!

James - I too am ignorant of what has caused your upset, but as the chap who is always getting confused with you (occasionally, as the saying goes, "with hilarious consequences") may I say I would miss your wit and wisdom if you threw in the towel.....

James please come back. I always enjoyed your input. Besides, if you visit your brother in New Jersey, how will we be able to get together for lunch.
