Praying To Old Testament Prophets & Non Saints.

Many years ago I was told or I read that everyone in Heaven is a Saint. Usually the description refers to those acclaimed by early Christians or have gone through the nowadays accepted Vatican procedures before being declared as such. Myself I do accept that everyone is Heaven is a Saint. Why then do we not pray to Abraham, Isaac, Moses et al, nor to our parents, relatives and friends who are in Heaven? Our Lady and other popular Saints must be very busy answering and supporting our prayers. This gives the impression that Abraham and other celebrities of the Old Testament and all relatives and friends are having a cushy restful time. At least we could ask the Old Testament celebrities to pray for the conversion of Jews and Peace in the Holyland.

(I look forward to a collection of quotations!)

More about Old Testament saints can be found here.

Here are a few:

1 Sept. in the Greek Church
4 Sept. with Moses in the Maronite Church.
He is commemorated daily in the Greek Mass.

Abel:
Quote:

In the Latin Church he is invoked in the Litany for the dying and his sacrifice is mentioned in the Canon of the mass with those of Abraham and Melchisideck.
28 Dec in the Coptic Calendar

Abraham:
Quote:

9 Oct. Rom. Mart.  dp. at Jerusalem, also in MGr.
28 Aug. in the Coptic and Abyssinian Churches,  full office of the day.
20 Aug. in the Maronite Church.
He is the patron of hotel men.

David:
Quote:

29 Dec. Rom. Mart., dp. at Jerusalem; dp. major at Fiesole.
The Greeks and Maronites keep his F. Sunday after Christmas
22 Dec. the Armenians commemorate him
19 Dec. Coptic Church.
26 Dec. Melchites

Isaac:
Quote:

24 Dec Solemn F. of Abraham, Isaac, and Joseph in the Coptic Church .
3 Sept Coptic Isaac alone .

There are loads!

Also, there's a Litany to the Old Testament saints. I don't know if it's authorised at all though.

Clare.

I never thought of litanies having to be authorized, I thought somebody wrote them, and they became popular.

Who authorizes litanies? What an amazing job! I wonder if there is an NVQ in Litany Authorization?

I still ask my parents, aunts, uncles, old friends, and the grandparents I never knew, to "have a word" in the right quarters" when I have problems I cannot solve on my own. I hope that does not make me a heretic. The results have been pretty good.

Rose,

As I understand it, pretty much any Litany is ok for private use, but only one (the Litany of Loreto, I think) is authorised for public recitation.

I could be wrong though!

I am with Rose on this one. I always include my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles when asking for intercession. I rather feel that they have the same sort of concerns about their relatives - for example - as I do. Of course I do not know whether they are in heaven or perhaps purgatory but I feel that at least some of them are in heaven, if not all of them, as yet.
As for Litanies, well - perhaps slightly misquoting - I always remember a teacher of mine (he taught us French) who used to say:-
"Seat of Wisdom"
"Cause of our joy"
whenever someone gave the right answer in class!

And dont forget that we are all Saints.

The ones in Heaven (and Purgatory) are no longer sinners though!

They can't lose their saint status. We can. :(

I'm just being realistic!

A person who, after due consideration, fully aware that he or she is disobeying God in a grave matter, makes a decision to follow self and defy God, is no saint.

Try telling that to someone who took no notice of the Gospel.

Has anyone heard the one about the cursed who will be told to depart into everlasting fire, which was prepared for the devil and his angels?

The Gospels are not for the faint hearted.
