It's also known as "Indifferentism".

Here's the Catholic Encyclopedia on the subject.

Quote:

Religious Indifferentism

The term given, in general, to all those theories, which, for one reason or another, deny that it is the duty of man to worship God by believing and practicing the one true religion. This religious Indifferentism is to be distinguished from political indifferentism, which is applied to the policy of a state that treats all the religions within its borders as being on an equal footing before the law of the country. Indifferentism is not to be confounded with religious indifference. The former is primarily a theory disparaging the value of religion; the latter term designates the conduct of those who, whether they do or do not believe in the necessity and utility of religion, do in fact neglect to fulfil its duties.

I think it was mentioned on a different thread, and I had heard it banded about in Catholic circles, there was another one (concept) that Clare and Gerry got on to , I was giong to ask about that, but I think I began to understand it as the topic took off, nelly

There's nothing new under the sun, Nelly!

When I started taking a real interest in the faith, and reading a few encyclicals, I was really struck by the "prophetic" in them!

I'd read an encyclical written in the 30s, say, and implicit would be a warning that if X happened, Y would result.

And lo and behold, X did happen, and Y did follow!

That is why I take Church teachings seriously, and why I think like I do!

The Church doesn't need to move with the times. She is ahead of them. And her very old warnings about very modern problems lend credibility to the Church and that She should stick to Her guns!

Not sure its the Church Clare, but that may be the case, re your comment moving with the times, I think that in General I take my Catholisim for Granted, you know the type, just a duty Catholic, and thats okay some are just asked and expected to do thier duty, some just pray, the power of prayer , now there`s somthing huge

No 14 was realy interesting, I kept on thinking of the Lib dems... nelly

Relativism Nelly, in crude terms, supports the concept that there is no such thing as an absolute. No absolutes in regard to the moral order or allowing for an Omnipotent God.

A comical answer:

It is junk-thinking dreamed up by intellectual playboys with nothing better to do than invent excuses evaporating any misbehaviour they or others are partial to – in absolute terms that is.

If the passion of one consists in playing at casual adultery he will evaluate it as only in a relative comparison to illicit insider-dealing for vast sums of money. If the amusement of his friend consists in illicit insider dealing, he in his turn evaluates it as only in a relative comparison to a game of casual adultery.

Such persons would live quite happily in Alice in Wonderland.

nelly k,
Thanks for that response. I find myself looking into many things b/c of the forums.
It goes to show the Spirit is never still in us.
