Funny how it strikes you as tasteless kitsch now but that is how all altars used to be cluttered, believe it or not. The changers probably thought that they were improving things, hard as that is to believe, so best not to be too uncharitable. Bit like the way old people clutter up the place with ornaments while nowadays most of us prefer the beauty of simplicity. John |

Spare me the arguments about architecture. Christ is risen. We have the opportunity to enjoy eternal life. The most important thing in a church, is that it be used for prayer. most important of all for The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. No "style" of architecture, altars, windows, candlesticks etc is superior. It is a matter of taste. To some people it is a matter of intellectual and artistic snobbery. |

It's nothing to do with snobbery. Rather, that what the Church has seen in recent decades has been a form of "inverted snobbery". Fair enough, it's good to manage with what's available. But lately, we've witnessed great things which were not just available, but in situ, being deliberately removed! That is inexcusable. It's one thing starting from scratch and ending up with a modest church. It's quite something else to start with a grand church and reduce it to scratch! Deliberately reducing what was once grand to something minimalist is, I would say, a whole lot worse than building something from scratch to a reasonable, but not grand, standard. Clare. |

Clare, I enjoyed the music. Sounded like Vivaldi. I liked it before. I liked it after. If forced to choose would choose before. You can of course have both simultaneously (high altar behind and low altar in front) Gerry |

Agreed. All fine old architecture, secular or religious, should be treasured and preserved. |

Just a thought. Would one of the admins like to add a Poll to this topic? Question: Which do you prefer? Suggested options: Before, After, Both, Neither. Edit: Just found out I can do it! Done it! Clare. |

Before needs Candles and a suitable background - one can include a Tabernacle on which there is a throne for The Monstrance for Benediction, and perhaps a shelf for flowers and candlesticks during Benediction. I think the trad zealots cheated in starting with just a table and cloth. In fact some modern altars are simple but quite attractive and are marble. The table top is on a central block and there is pattern on the block. After is far too cluttered and fussy and of course would prevent a Holy Mass in the New Rite facing the people. I noticed some genuflecting to the tabernacle but I didn't see anyone placing the Blessed Sacrament in it. The second candle from the right on the back row was 2mm too far to the right. (UNOHOO will now ask me!) |

Derek, I would have thought it was obvious that that was a New Rite church being made ready for a Tridentine Rite Mass. I expect that after the Mass was over, sadly, those chaps would have had to dismantle it all and return it to its former "glory". :( Clare. |

Mon Dieu ! A reasonable effort but too many cooks obviously reflecting French labour laws! Me and the lads would have sorted it in half the time and done a better job! And nearly dropping the altar front panel was very unprofessional. Mind you they didn't have much to work with did they? Veritas Truth CARLO |

I just think it is a lot nonsence, sorry to be so uncharitable, Iam not convinced that reording the Altar will have any great impact once one walks out the door, with the same token I have no objections to those who desire such Altars.... I will admit to possibly having a chip on my shoulder and others can decide whether that is the case, but I am afraid I find much of the movement elitist in there atittude, hence there is a snobbery about it all My Background is in Parishes that were never to affluent, all those flowers and the like... it does require finance I also come from modern post 60`s build ,and our Altar was never that bare, the Tabernacle being in view behind the Altar a Crusifix on the Alter, I noted the very large Cross on the wall as well at the back of the Alter, agian something similar to my childhood Parish which I still go to from time to time... I have great memories from that Parish /Church, the small Side church is lovely... nelly |
