There are no limits on this one. You may do as many things as you want, the only stipulations being:

1 You must obey the Pope and any person duly authorised by the Holy Father, to tell you what you may or may not do.
2 You may do nothing immoral.
3 You may not say or do anything heritical.
4 You must obey Canon Law
5 You must obey civil and criminal laws of the State in which you have your diocese, provided such laws are not against the law of God.

Carry on, members.

Request permission to retire, immediately, on the grounds of the impossibility of the task,
given the recent past and current trends in way we run our Church in the UK.

Joseph if I were the Pope I would give you permission to retire from your Diocesan post, and offer you the post of Enforcer of the Terms of Redemptoris Sacramentum, in England and Wales.

Would you accept?

Ban flip-flops, grungy sandals and sneakers from the altar servers and make the kids get hair cuts. That little fellow who looked like a cute hobit finally got a hair cut, so he can at least see the Lectionary when he hands it to Father!!! Honestly, there should be a standard!

I suppose that you are right Karin but this is the modern trend nowadays. Thinking back during my era we went through the phases of Teddyboys (Drainpipes, Winkle Pickers, Flares,) then the phase of Mods and Rockers much to the wrath of the older generation. Wonder what's next. ? :wh:

OK Denis, if you had been a bishop what would you have done about Drainpipes, Winkle Pickers, Flares,) then the phase of Mods and Rockers, if they had turned up at Mass dressed in their gear?

Can we stay on the topic please?

If I were a Diocesan Bishop, I would assure all my parishes that ALL accommodation will be made for the handicapped and challenged members, so everyone could attend Mass and church functions, give a timetable when all repairs and additions would be completed and assure everyone they can be safe and worry free in the parishes they helped to build.

Carry out a Diocesan laity census (voluntary of course) to identify:

Pastoral needs of individuals and families.

Available skills and talents.

What an easy way of rooting out how many people are filling roles for which they are ill equipped.

If I had been a Bishop then, I would probably have been of the same frame of mind, let them get on with it as It's Not the Clothes that Maketh the Man. Most of them probably grew up to be well respected citizens, and who knows some may be our present day clergy.l

If I were a present day Bishop what would I do, Well First of all I would get rid of these Parish Committees and give the Parish back to the Parishoners so that they are made to feel part of the Parish.

Then I would excommunicate all the so called experts who are good at saying, but not at doing.

Then I would make sure that priests are preaching the words of the Church, not just giving their own opinion.

Then I would make sure that all altar servers were young boys or young men, in the hope that it would foster a feeling of a vocation.

Then I would get the priest to encourage people from the pulpit on a Sunday to join any catholic organisation within the church to carry out Catholic Action SVP, KSC, CWL, etc. Let us concentrate from within, let others come to us.

Would anyone vote for me at the conclave :tc:

Denis, yes. I like some of your ideas, particularly the last one.

;)

If I were a diocesan bishop, I'd register on some of these Catholic forums to get an idea of what the Faithful are talking about...

Excellent idea, Patrick, because I think we are fair representation of the average person in the pew. We may be able to express ourselves more eloquently and effusively (50p words), but I feel what we experience in our parishes - and witness, is probably what others sense, but do not verbalise. And I don't think it matters if we are in the UK, the US or Australia, we seem to have the pulse of the Church and know the needs we all have to move the Church forward.

It would not surprise me at all if the bishops have volunteers studying Catholic discussion forums. It makes sense.

Wouldn't it be fun (and constructive) if one registered on here and declared himself, without saying exactly which bishop he is! We would be able to talk things over with him without identifying ourselves.
