Whilst I appreciate that kneeling to receive Holy Communion is more devotional, in practice, on Sundays and other busy Feasts I found the system distracting. Some people, understandably, knelt longer than others and sometimes you had to dash to kneel down before the priest came. Is there enough room to squeeze in beween two people? Once knelt down someone probably squeezed in at the side of you. On quiet weekdays of course things were smoother. In some churches you were required to pass the plate to one another, despite there being Altar Servers, which was a further distraction.

The Communicants should be able to be reverend and devotional with the least distraction. I know, sadly, some don't show much reverence and devotion but I don't think kneeling at altar rails would make any difference.

It would if you had a painful shoulder and someone else used it as a support. That did used to happen.

Each to their own Derek.

You and others who think like you would have the option of standing at the altar rail in the same way that you now stand in the queue.

Not a problem is it?

Unless the object is to deny those who prefer to kneel the option to do so.

Not a problem.

But you try and persuade the priests!

That my dear PJD is because sadly some of them have an agenda and that is to deny facilities and choice to those who wish to kneel.

Sometimes it amounts to little more than a desire not to appear 'old fashioned' or to upset a trendy Bishop or their fellow Priests at the National Amalgamated Council of Diocesan Operatives and Lay Tambourine Shakers.

Nil desperandum in time most of them will come round.

There is no other way.

How about this solution? An altar rail stretching across a part of the nave, at right angles to the wall or a pillar, proportional to the percentage of people requiring it. I suggest a ten foot run, maximum. Would that be aesthetically acceptable?

No need, Derek.

I've already quoted Pope Paul VI from the end of the 60s!

No it would not.

Quite frankly it would be ridiculous!

Here is a very interesting article about the use and history of Sanctus bells.

We have a young lady altar server, she knows how to ring a Sanctus bell - no silly tinkle tinkle tinkle, the way she rings the bells we all get the message, that something very important is happening on the altar.
