I think the reason is we as a society are affraid to give people a nudge.

We sometimes worry so much about letting people work things out on their own and make their own choices that we forget that sometimes people need a little polite kick in the pants to get them moving.

Children, for example, will not just decide to take part in a bunch of school activities or excell in their academics. They need a little encouragement.

And when you really think about it we're all not as far off from children as we really think we are.
