This afternoon I telephoned a priest in a parish a few miles away. I got an answering machine, giving times of Mass at his three churches. Father's voice sounded like that of an old man. I know him well, a few months ago his voice was strong and clear. The message ended with a number (of another priest) to call in emergencies, and a courteous request not to leave messages asking the priest to call back because he too ill to make telephone calls.

This priest, who has ministered well, and spent a lot of time visiting a hospice, small hospital, several nursing and residential homes, and sick people in their own homes, is only in his fifties. I see his customary good manners, in putting a detailed message on the answering machine while he is seriously ill.

Please pray for Father David, for all priests in similar situations (overwork) and for Catholics who are seeing the numbers of priests go down and down.

Also, let us pray for more vocations to the priesthood.
