I saved a halfpenny a week, until I had 24. A whole shilling,a bob? I spent hours counting them over and over again. Going round to the old lady at number 40 to help her make a clip rug. I did that regularly, I must have been at least 40 before my mother told me, that as soon as I left, the dear lady used to remove the clips and put them back in, properly. Knitting striped scarves from the best bits of wool from ripped out sweaters. Taking the old clothes to the rag warehouse, we got 2 shillings a stone for mixed and 2 bob a pound for pure wool. Catapults. Bent pins for fishing hooks. Playing kick the can. Drawing cricket stumps on the front garden wall, with a stone. The grooves are there to this day. Playing rounders in the road. Now there is a petition for a pelican crossing, due to heavy traffic. Sledging down a hill nearly a mile long. Now it is so busy it has road markings, and traffic jams. |
