Certain things take me back to my childhood, one of them is the smell of Domestos which makes me think of Saturday evenings when I was a kid. We used to go to the matinée in the local cinema, when we would get home my mother would have the floors washed - oilcloth in those days, no fancy carpets - and she obviously used some bleach in the water; newspapers would be spread on the damp floors to keep them clean. Round about 5 o'clock, we'd all have the keep quiet whilst my dad got the football results of the wireless to see if he'd won a fortune on the pools. Talking about going to the matinée, there was always a serial before the main feature; my parents used to make us go off 'the pictures' for Lent and we used to wait anxiously for the kids who were allowed to go to keep us up to date with what was happening in the serial. |
