2 Why do retrievers have such thick hair just under their necks? My guess, for an answer to 2, is that retrievers being gun dogs, were bred to pick up birds. A bird that is still alive could claw through the dog's neck, and damage the windpipe or jugular vein, so breeders set out to produce a dog with long thick hair around the neck. |
