In the USA and other countries he is identified with Santa Claus who distributes gifts to children on Christmas eve. Born at Parara, a city of Lycia in Asia Minor he made a pilgrimage to Egypt and Palestine in his youth, shortly after his return he became Bishop of Myra. He was cast into prison during the persecution of Diocletian, but he was released after the accession of Constantine. He died 6th December 345 or 352. Among others, St. Nicholas of Myra is patron of mariners, merchants, bakers, travellers, and of course children. |
