On the other hand , the evidence of my own eyes did not suggest terminal decline but it is clear to me that Irish Catholics concentrate far mor on charitable deeds and social action than doctrine.

Ideally, religious practise and charitable activity, go hand in hand. In my experience, it did, amongst Catholics of Irish extraction, when I was a child. Most of the parishioners were either Irish born or second or third generation Irish, and many were quite poor. The mutual support amongst those people left me a legacy of fine example. For most of them, doctrinal knowledge was restricted to the Penny Catechism, they had their faith, they saw no reason to delve deeply or argue about it. Doctrine matters, so does love of neighbour.
