I'd have to think, this might be an interesting debate and the question is simple. What is alive and what is not?

Now you can take this to several different contexts. Such as when is a baby alive? Is it at the point of conception (when the sperm and egg meet) or maybe when the heart starts beating or not until it exits the uterus and takes it's first breath of air? And for those of you hippies in here, are trees alive, grass alive and is the planet alive? And in what sense?

DEBATE!

Alive, capability to think and move at your own accord and the ability to think, example Glad0s was alive and is still alive, even if you are dead bodily you may not be dead spiritually in culture.

Hmm.. Interesting. I would have to say alive is living without the assistance of money, electronics, and other such commodities. So few have actually became alive.

I think we had this discussion in my biology class 2 years ago. We came up with about 7 criteria.

Ability to reproduce
Ability to interact with its surroundings
...and I can't remember the other ones. Will add more when I can.

I still feel Glad0s was alive and is still alive, despite not being all of these.

I believe that being alive is where you can think or feel what is around you. So, with that being said, Trees and plants can all feel the world around them as they live off of it, Humans and animals can think and feel everything around them, and as for spiritual beings, they can think can't they? =)

there are plenty of deep deep ocean stuff that live off of pure heat + carbon dioxide

Like oblagate anaerobes...small bacteria that are killed by oxygen. The claustridium family is an example (they cause botulism, tetanus, and gas gangrene)

I actually remember this crap from my 10th grade biology class...amazing

Well to me there are a few definitions I have for what is alive.

The technical meaning. This is applied to all types of organisms on Earth which are alive and function.

The sense of awareness meaning. I think this would apply to what Temp was getting at. For example some people are not alive. They may be moving, breathing, acting but they lack a sense of awareness that truely allows them to live their life.
