Can explain this to me I'm sorry in advance, i don't mean to sound racist Or offend anyone in the slightest But here's my rant; Right as you may guess with it being election week, its about Obama I don't see why everyone is making such a big deal out of him being black I don't see how race has anything to do with it Correct me if I'm wrong, but i believe you have only had 1 other black person run for president before... Now lets look at the odds, you have independence for a couple of hundred years now And ever since then you have changed presidents every 4 years And only once has a black man ran for it (twice now) I know you have all this thing where at one point black people weren't allowed to vote and everything But now we talk about equality amongst men and women, its great that a black man has finally won But such a big deal doesn't have to be made Lets look at it this way: Your a white man, a white man has just been elected yet again You go on the streets shouting about how its so good that the white man won You get sued by multiple people for racism You get arrested for hate crimes Its published in local papers that "groups of white supremacists were protesting on the streets" ... No you weren't, you were celebrating that the president was just elected Anyway at the end of the day i think race has played far too big a part He is just a person, like anyone else I don't see why certain people want to kill him But at the same time, i don't see how its being made such a big deal of by black people without it being considered racist. Ive just read that back and I'm not even sure if it made sense to myself But i know what i mean Basically its the old, one rule for one, another rule for another No i am not a racist, I'm not even american. I just noticed it was such a big deal that he was black When in your "State Of Equality" People should be chanting about his policies, his leadership skills, whatever else he can do... not his skin colour I'll leave you with a little fact here. I'm not sure where the information came from, but it was on a programme on the BBC a couple of nights ago. 10,000 American black people were interviewed about their reasons behind voting for Obama. 9,100 Replied "I'd love to see a black man as president" 500 Replied "He has good policies" 400 Replied without a reason (Not the exact numbers, i don't have a good memory) Which shows that a lot of people voted for him due to skin colour I'm not saying he didn't deserve to be voted in I'm just stating some facts, and i know 10,000 is such a small number compared to the population of America But not everyone could be interviewed I'm sure ![]() Sorry, rant over. |

To be honest, black people have plenty of reasons to "play the race card". ever since white man explored the unknown world there has been little but persecution and slavery for black people. Africans, Aboriginals, Native Americans (but they red lel) to put it simply, white people have had it pretty cushy black people haven't. They deserve the pride and honour of having a black person leading them and you should feel the pride of having finally reached such a high point of racial equality. you say the stuff about 9000 voted because he's black. A lot of the time that's just how elections work. People voted for obama because he's black. people voted for mccain because he's a war veteran. Pretty trivial stuff. this also applies to "playing the race card". I could just as well say that Mccain "played the PoW card" and palin played the "mother of a soldier card" a lot. Politicians play on their strengths. it would have been way more unusual if obama HADN'T put race in the equation. Besides, dat brotha's barely black compared to most homies ![]() summary; they deserve it+at the end of the day it's just a colour |

OK, two things. First, there may have been a group of voters who supported Obama because of his skin color, but the for the majority this was not a major factor. Second, being outside of America, I assume that you do not fully appreciate the rascisim that is underlying. Until the 1860s, only 150 years ago, black people were enslaved because of thier skin color. "Enslaved" makes it soun easy: many of these black people were made to do manual labor from before sunup to after sundown every day of the year, all for the master's benefit. Even abolitionists who wanted to rid the nation of slavery still felt that blacks were inferior to white skinned people in society. It was not more than 50 years ago that black people gained the right to vote, the most basic and defining right in a democracy. Even then, it did not come easily as millions of whites violently opposed the idea of blacks being equal to themselves. Eating at the same lunch counter as a black man or even sitting the the same row at the movies was unheard of; anyone who suggested that blacks ought to have an equal vote was downright absurd. Even today in America, people make prejudices about others, often before they even speak to them, based upon race. The fact that a person with an African father can today become the president of the United States, when just 150 years ago he would be working his ass off at a plantation, speaks volumes for the progress that America has made. It is historic, and all black people certainly have the right to be excited about it. The fact that an African American can become President of the United States is a sign to every American that they can dare to dream big. No person can now say "that isn't possible" because of thier race. Barack Obama proved on Tuesday night that anything is possible if you work for it, he is truly the epitome of the American Dream. |

Plus, this will also be a major advantage in bridge building between previously alienated black communities. Black people will be more apathetic to their country if there is someone they can identify with at the helm. For example, rappers, gangstas and "niggas" (note. nigga is not necessarily a racist term, it is a slang term for gangster people etc. you know what i mean) will identify with obama well - he has stated several times that he likes rap music. you get the idea. america will begin to heal a lot of racial tension and finally bring itself up to par with other multicultural societies. |

Well I'm going to be completely honest here. I didn't want to say this before but I have a big fear now that he may be getting into the office. HE'S GOING TO PUT WHITE PEOPLE INTO SLAVERY!!! Also Jonni, you bring up some good points HOWEVER. Being black and being a vet are two, COMPLETELY different things. Being black is something that no one person has control over and being a vet is a choice that you made and years of hard work. Being black doesn't mean you spent years of hard work to become black. But most importantly: ICIE JUICY 2012!!!!

I can see what your both saying I realise black people were slaves etc And i i was also asking for an answer off American clan members I wasn't just ranting I don't know anything about it apart from what British media decides to tell us. I know that they have every right to be proud he is black Or mixed race, whichever you want to say But what i am saying is black people are basically tip toed around I don't know about your country but over here if we were to chant if say Gordon Brown was running against a black man And Gordon Brown won, we would all be racist I'm not sure how to express what I'm saying without sounding racist So I'm not going to continue incase i cause offence. I know this is a different thing And this sounds completely racist But did you know our government was sued for having Christmas tree's in public places? The muslims didn't like it... We were also threatened directly because on the X factor show People sang a song about supporting our troups What I'm trying to put across is people complain about racial equality Then have a whole different set of rules for different race's |

i felt the same way at first, but when you think of it if a black person was to become priminister (Canadian goverment) it would be a big deal to, the diffreance is canada never had slavery of black people. (just like the first woman priminister was) but its a big deal because he is the first its a big deal because its finally showing that the united states has gone from when the black man finally didint have right's, to when the get rights, all the way to when in 1920 when there was over 4million KKK members and to now when a black man with work can become a presedent just like a white man. just because the people that where in the years of slavery of the black man have died it doesent mean that so has the years that it happened in. racism will always be a part of this world. Icie for 2012. |
