Blueye looked at her kits, her eldest son, Dreampaw, laying next to her. She looked at him lovingly. “What should we call them?” She asked him. He looked closely at them, one was tiny, and pure white, with amber eyes. She looked like a small white gem, like a crystal. “Streamkit.” He said, fierceness in his eyes. Blueye nodded, looking at the small white kitten. Her eyes shifted, looking at a bright orange kitten. He looked like tiny ball of fire. More a spark, like Ember. “Ashkit.” She mewed, motioning towards the orange kitten. “That’s a great name.” Dreampaw said softly. Blueye nodded, looking at the rest of them. A creamy white one caught Dreampaw’s eye. He stared at it, knowing there was something about it that was different than the others. “This one is Dustkit.” He said, thinking it looked like a slight fog on a sunny morning. Blueye just nodded, looking at a different kit. She had a feeling this kit would be unlike the others. Her eyes narrowed as she mewed, “Stormkit, this one is Stormkit.” She looked at the black and white kitten, something about him made her shiver. She pushed that thought to the back of her mind, looking up at Dreampaw. “I remember when you were just like these kits, a squirming little furball on the ground.” She said, lovingly. He was the only surviving kit of her last litter. At 9 moons old, he was musclar, and strongly built. His healthy marble brown coat shone in the afternoon sun. She smiled, looking down at her paws. “That seems like so long ago now.” She added, sorrow filling her eyes. 9 moons ago seemed like another world. She was a kitty-pet, who had just given birth to 8 beautiful kittens. Her mate was a muscular brown marble cat, like Dreampaw. His name was Snakepelt. But, her owners didn’t like their kittens, so one morning Blueye watched her people put her wonderful kits into a bag, and drive off with them. Blueye and Snakepelt had managed to follow them, but when they arrived at the large lake, she saw her people throwing the bag into the water. She dove in, and started searching for them, but by the time she found them, it was to late for most. Except Dreamkit, now Dreampaw. He survived. Her eyes stung as she remembered that awful day. After that, they took their remaining kit and left the human place, becoming cats of the wild.

Dreampaw awoke to a loud mewing. It came from a hungry Streamkit. “Mom, the kits are hungry.” He mewed, tired. When no reply came, he lifted his head, and turned to where his mother slept. She wasn’t there. He forced himself up, and stretched. “Mother?” He called, hoping for a reply. When none came, he started looking. He searched every branch, every bush, behind every tree, but he couldn’t find her. After an hour of searching, he padded back to the kits, praying she’d be back there, but she wasn’t. His sorrowfilled gaze swept over the newborn kits, wondering how they’d survive without they’re mother. Remembering his promise to his mother, determination filled his eyes. He picked the kits up, carrying to in his mouth, and balancing to on his back. He soon reached a pond, and set the mewing kit’s down. He dipped his paw into the freezing water, and drew it back out again. He set it near one of the kittens, hoping they’d lick it. If they didn’t drink, they’d die quickly, and he would fail his mother. He wouldn’t do that. He couldn’t. Stormkit wriggled slowly up to Dreampaw, and started licking the soaked paw. Soon the other kits did the same. Relieved, Dreampaw let his body relax, thinking of a way to feed them.

When the kits were done drinking, he listened intently for prey. He was hungry, and he knew the kits were too. Soon, the scurrying of a mouse caught his attention. He padded towards it, killing it in a swift bite. He chewed it slowly, picking the meat off the bones. When it was well smashed, he spit it out in front of the kits, wondering if they’d eat it. If not, he’d have to think of a different way to keep them alive. Fortunatley, after a good bit of sniffing, the kits started to lick the mouse, one even bit it a little. Dreampaw dipped both his front paws in, and held them out for the kits. He was happy the kits were already starting to eat hard food. His gaze swept over them. Every one of them looked like Blueye in a way. He had to find her. He made up his mind, as soon as the kits were old enough, they’d search for their mother. All of them together.

Two weeks later, Dreampaw awoke with a start. It seemed as if what had awoken him, was a feeling. A feeling that today was the day they would leave. He looked at the small kittens, knowing they were fit, and healthy. He knew today would be the start of a long, treacherous journey. In it, much would be lost, but much would be found as well. Bravery and wits would conquer all. And a new life would start. A life of loyalty. Many battles would be lost, and won. A life where cats would be born, and die. Cats would betray, and kill. Cats would love, and laugh. Generations of cats would become friends, though seperated. Seperated by a powerful bond, a knowing that sometimes being apart, is better. Five cats, and their long journey, would be talked about for years to come. Many, many years.

Dustkit awoke, looking around her. She took in the breeze, smelling rabbit in the air. She was very young, but could almost catch a rabbit the size of her. Which was a small rabbit, but still. She stood up slowly, and stretched, shaking the sleep out of her eyes. She padded up to dreampaw who was already awake, and staring into space. “Dreampaw? You okay?” She asked, gazing at him wonderingly. Dreampaw shook himself out of his trance, and looked at Dustkit. “We leave today.” Was all he mewed as he turned, and padded towards the pond. Dustkit just stared at him, wondering what he meant. She padded back to the other kits, nudging them awake. “He said, ‘we leave today’ then walked off, I have no clue what he was talking about.” She told them, her mind thinking about the past few weeks, trying to remember if he had said anything about it. “Then ask him.” Ashkit mewed. Dustkit looked at him. She couldn’t believe she didn’t think of that before. “I will.” She said, walking away her head held high. She padded slowly towards him, wondering if he would tell her. He was grooming himself. What was the big even that they were going to? And what if she didn’t want to go? Dreampaw looked up at her as she sat in front of him. “If your wondering where we’re going, I don’t know. Just get ready.” He mewed, sternly. Why was he being like this? “What if I don’t want to go?” She mewed. He looked at her for a long moment, seeming to take in every hair on her body. “Then you’ll stay behind, and likely get eaten by wolves.” She could see the glint of humor in his eyes, but he quickly washed it away. “Now get ready. Give yourself a grooming, we’re going on a long journey to who knows where. You need to be ready.” Even though he had a feeling he wouldn’t need to be groomed, and neither would they, he wanted his last memory of his home to be him doing a normal thing. And watching them doing the same. He watched Dustkit slump away.

Dustkit slumped towards the other kittens. “Apparently, we’re going on a long journey, and need to groom ourselves. He doesn’t know where to, but we’re leaving really soon. Get ready.” They all stared at her for a bit. Then questions started flying all around. “So we’re just getting up and walking, until we feel like stopping?” Stormkit asked. “Why?” Ashkit pitched in. “Won’t we get tired?” Streamkit added, “Can’t we stay here?” Dreampaw heard the racket and yowled. “Yes, we’re just walking. Why? We’re looking for something very important to us. Yes, we will get tired, but we’ll keep walking. No, you can’t stay here, unless you want to be tonights dinner for the foxes, badgers, and wolves.” He mewed, sternly. “Give yourselfs a good licking, then we’ll leave.” He said, mewing more gently now. Stormkit and Ashkit looked at eachother, question in their eyes. Dustkit slunk to a corner, and started licking a paw. And Streamkit was still firing questions. “How long will we be gone? How can we leave if we don’t know where we’re going? What are we looking for? Why are we looking for it? Will we find it? Where will we find it? Why aren’t you answering my questions?!?!” When no one replied, she padded over to a tree and pouted, staring at the ground.

After a little while, Dreampaw padded over to them again. “We’re leaving, come on.” He said, knowing this was hard for all of them. “You need to stay right behind me, and don’t stray off. You could get hurt. If you scent any animal that isn’t prey, warn me. If you see thunder clouds, tell me. If it starts getting windy, we’ll need to find a place to stay. When you get tired, tell me, and we might be able to rest. We are going to move quickly, and we won’t stop on a whim. We’ll stop when the sun has risen much more than the time before, any questions?” Streamkit opened her mouth, “Nevermind.” He mewed quickly, motioning with his tail for them to follow him. Dustkit stood up, and walked behind him, Streamkit close behind. Ashkit reluctantly dragged himself up, and Stormkit scowled, walking behind them. Dreampaw started slowly, walking at a managable pace for the kits. He ducked under trees, and jumped over logs, stopping every once and a while to wait for them to catch up. So far, they were going quickly. Dustkit, being the smallest, quickly fell to the back, with Streamkit right in front of her.

Stormkit was soon padding right next to Dreampaw, stealthily and strongly. Ashkit was on the other side of him, but fell behind to help Mythkit and Streamkit. When they refused his offer, he caught up again. They were both murmuring quietly in the back. “Dreampaw’s older now. He’s saved us many times, and we have to repay him.” Dustkit whispered. Streamkit thought for a while, then mewed, “Remember what he said mom told him about names? When your born, your name ends with kit. Later, it ends with paw, and then when your worthy, you get a last name that’s special. Like Blueye.” Dustkit looked at her, knowing she was right. Dreampaw was worthy of that name. She thought for a moment, and remembered how he always was looking at the stars. She knew he was wondering if their mom was looking at the same ones. She yowled, hoping they would stop. Dreampaw turned, but kept running. Ashkit fell back again, to see if they needed help. “What is it?” He asked. Dustkit wondered if she should tell him. Deciding against it, she mewed, “Get Dreampaw to stop. We need to talk to him, it’s important.” After that, she stopped, waiting for Ashkit to catch up with Dreampaw. It didn’t take long, because Ashkit was as fast lightning as she thought.

Dreampaw and Stormkit stopped, padding back towards them. “What?” He asked, kind of impatiently. She looked at him for a long moment, like he had done to her. “I don’t know if there’s some special ceremony or something, but here it goes.” She mewed, hoping he’d like it, “Dreampaw, you’ve helped us for a long time. You deserve something special. You deserve a name. I’ve seen how you look up at the stars every night. So, Streamkit and I have decided your special new name will be… Dreamstar!” She glanced up at him, and his eyes were shining. He looked sad, but happy at the same time. “Thank you. I don’t know what I can do to repay you.” He mewed, quietly. It was silent for a while, but Streamkit broke it by saying, “Rest would be nice!” Humor glinted in Dreamstar’s eyes as he mewed, “Okay, we’ll rest for a bit.” They had left when the sun had just barely risen, and now it was high in the sky. All the kits were worn out, and collapsed. Dreamstar looked at them as he recited his new name, “Dreamstar.”

Apparently, they had fallen asleep, because when dreamstar awoke, it was completly dark. All the kits were awake, murmuring to themselves. When he looked at them, they rushed over to him. “We’re ready to go!” They chorused. He was amused by their sudden change in opinion. “Okay, we'’ll hunt, then we’ll leave.” he mewed, humor glinted in his eyes. With that, he padded away into the forest. Dustkit and Ashkit followed him, and Streamkit and Stormkit went the other direction in search of food. Ashkit soon strayed off, scenting a mouse, so Dustkit was left alone with Dreamstar. “What exactly are we looking for?” She asked him, mewing quietly in case Ashkit was nearby. Dreamstar matched her volume, whispering, “Do you really want to know?” Seeing the look on her face, he knew she did.”Fine. I’ll tell you. But you can’t tell the others, okay?” He said, knowing he could trust Dustkit. “Why? Why can’t I tell?” She asked before he could continue. “Because…. I don’t know. I just don’t want them to get their hopes up, I guess…” Sorrow filled his eyes as he continued. “When you were just little kittens, your mom disapearred.” Dustkit could see wetness stinging his eyes. It was wierd, she’d never really thought about her mother. She’d just known Dreamstar was the one who took care of them. She looked up at him again, waiting for him to continue. “I don’t know where she went, but one morning, I woke up, and she was gone. Just like that. The day before, I had made a promise to take care of you, no matter what. That’s what I did. But I’ve also made it my mission to find her. I have to.” Tears stung his eyes as he finished. He looked the other way, trying to hide his weakness from her. “So, we’re looking for our mom?” She asked, knowing the answer. “In that case, lets get going!” She padded off towards the scent of a vole, leaving Dreamstar alone.
