The soft twitter of birds hummed around the clearing, only the slightest scuffles of tiny paws and tails against the forest floor reaching Riverstep's ears as she crouched, bright eyes flickering from side to side, waiting, searching out her prey. The morning was always the best time to hunt; the prey were sleepy and slow runners, and she preferred the morning in general anyway. It was always the quietest part of the day, before the apprentices and their mentors turned up for hunting-training.

It was nearing sunhigh now, Riverstep noticed, looking up for a moment at the sky. The blinding flicker of sunlight caused her to snap her eyes shut in momentary pain, but it quickly eased and she opened them again, staring back down at the forest floor. There was no visible creature around the thick twining ferns and bushes, but she could hear them. There was a bird just behind there, and a shrew scuffling almost straight into her paws. She could probably catch them both if she was fast enough.

Riverstep's paws kneaded into the rain-softened ground, unsheathing her claws and pulling her body back, ready to pounce. Dropping into the hunting posture properly, she shifted and pounced, left paw crashing down onto the bird -- it was a sparrow, she noticed -- and right scrambling, slamming next to the shrew, missing it by a whisker and sending it squealing into the brush.

"Foxdung!" she muttered, scowling and dragging back the sparrow, inspecting it and turning it over with her claw. Well, that wasn't too bad -- she supposed she was just showing off by trying to catch the shrew as well.

"Showing off to who?" she asked out loud, her voice echoing through the empty clearing.

(And this is where someone comes in and scares the crap out of her. XD)

Desertflower trotted through the forest, enjoying the lovely day. The sun felt warm and comfortable on her half shedded fur. She turned her head up to the sky, letting the gentle rays flutter across her face. The joy was quickly replaced by a wave at sadness. This day would be so much lovelier if she had company. But most of the Clan distrusted her for her loner blood and some wouldn't come anywhere near her. She shook her head. Why can't they see I'm not evil? I' just as good as any of them, why can't they just see that? She started to run, run anywhere. She just wanted to get away from the lies, the hate, the pain. She stopped by the fern hollow, nearly falling over a cat that stood in her way. "Ahh!" She cried out, landing in the grass.
