I have received a copy of A Hard Day's Night UAS-6366. This is the centered print label variation with I'll Cry Instead. Side A matrix UAS-6366A-1E Delta (triangle) 9595. Side B '' UAS-6366B-1E " 9595-X. Deep Groove labels. Am I correct to assume this is a Monarch pressing? What's cool is the album arrived complete with a United Artists Records company sleeve with 9 UA albums pictured on each side including AHDN! |

I'm having trouble posting pictures of the sleeve so I will do my best to describe it in as much detail as possible. On an Orange background , in Blue lettering are the words United Artists Records Catalog Highlights These words are flanked on either side by the small letter a in Blue inside a large U in Black. These words are printed at the very top of the sleeve. Nine United Artists Albums covers are pictured in Black & White in 3-D fashion in front of Dodger Blue "boxes." The reverse has the same configuration but the background is now a mustard color with the "boxes" displaying a fuscia shade. The United Artists Records Catalog Highlights lettering is also fuscia. Some of the titles present are: 1 Goldfinger, John Barry--Our Hero...Pat Cooper, Del Reeves Sings Girl On The Billboard, Jimmy Roselli The Italian Album, Al Caiola Solid Gold guitar.....and more PLUS The Beatles A Hard Day's Night! There is a date at the bottom of the sleeve--Printed in U.S.A. 3/67. |

Yes, that's a Monarch copy. Available in October, 1966. |

Frank, you've often stated that you are partial to Monarch pressings of Beatles records, is there any particular reason? |

For all Beatles-related LPs EXCEPT "Two Virgins," the Monarch pressing tends to be harder to find -- usually because it is not only a west-coast pressing but a later copy. In general, people collect Monarchs because the albums have good sound quality. The Monarch pressings of Led Zep's first LP and of the Doors' first LP in mono are among the collectible ones. They're not all that rare, but listeners like Monarch. It's not the same about the sound quality of 45s, though. Companies could request 45s in vinyl or styrene, and some labels preferred the cheaper styrene (e.g., Vee Jay). Even so, the toughest Beatles-related Monarchs to get are the four Oldies singles. Monarch parts were used by other factories, but the Monarch pressing has a different label style and is pressed in styrene. There are VERY FEW of these out there. |

Frank. speaking of the Oldies singles...aren't the hardest of those to find the ones WITHOUT the dash between the catalog number on the label? |

RIGHT! Those are the Monarch copies. They appear to be scarcer than the Decca "My Bonnie" single! |
